THROGGS NECK, NY – Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) became the fifth player in Maritime College women's lacrosse history with 100 career goals on Friday night. She reached the milestone with her fifth goal of the game, an unassisted tally with 2:19 remaining in the third quarter. Nicolosi added another tally in the fourth, as the Privateers (2-0) earned a 20-13 victory over Maine Maritime (0-3) in the home opener at Reinhart Field.
In addition to her six goals, Nicolosi distributed two assists to complete an eight-point effort. She added three ground balls.
Jenna Lesiewicz (Wading River, NY) finished with four goals and an assist to go along with six draw controls and five ground balls.
Tori Gay (Whiteford, MD) had three goals and an assist, while
Emily Commodore (Tinton Falls, NJ) also scored three times.
Morgan Tracy (Cambridge, MD) contributed two goals, two assists and six draw controls, and
Avery Jillson Neuwirth (Croton-On-Hudson, NY) tallied four points on a goal and three assists.
Tori Koenig (Roxbury, NJ) (2-0) made nine saves in the winning effort.
Nicolosi's first goal of game came just 29 seconds into the contest, and Maritime increased its advantage to 3-0 on tallies by Commodore and Gay. After the Mariners pulled within 3-2, Nicolosi started a 6-0 spurt that increased the Privateers' advantage to 9-2 early in the second quarter. The margin was 10-3 at halftime.
Maine Maritime's Hazel Stoddard made it 13-6 midway through the third quarter before
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) scored on a free position attempt to spark a five-goal Maritime run that gave the Privateers their largest lead of the game, 18-6. Lillian Diversi found the back of the net just before time expired in the third quarter, however, for the first of six straight Maine Maritime scores that cut the Mariners' deficit to 18-12. Nicolosi's 101
st career goal snapped the Maine Maritime rally, and Tracy later closed out the scoring in the 20-13 triumph.
Stoddard finished with five goals and two assists for the Mariners. She also controlled seven draws and picked up six ground balls. Aubrey Mitchell had six points on four goals and two assists, while Diversi tallied three goals and an assist. Bella Scolaro recorded five draw controls and four ground balls. Kelsey Melton (0-3) got the start in goal and was credited with four saves before being relieved by Ella Bowes, who notched four saves of her own.
The Privateers play their second straight home game on Wednesday, when Ramapo (1-1) visits Reinhart Field for a 5 p.m. matchup.
