Maritime Notches Hard-Fought Win Over Ramapo

THROGGS NECK, NY – After scoring 20-plus goals in each of its first two games this season, the Maritime College women's lacrosse team relied on its goalkeeper on Wednesday.  The Privateers had a 10-5 lead entering the fourth quarter before Ramapo scored three straight goals to pull within two midway through the final period.  However, Tori Koenig (Roxbury, NJ) made four saves in the final 5:26, as Maritime (3-0) held on for a 10-8 victory over the Roadrunners (2-2) at Reinhart Field.

Ramapo got on the board first before the Privateers responded with six of the next seven goals to open up a 6-2 lead.  Maritime held a 7-4 edge at halftime, then outscored the Roadrunners 3-1 in the third quarter to increase their advantage to 10-5.  Kelly Griffin cut the margin to 10-6 at the 12:51 mark of the final period, and she assisted on Leah Whitney's tally 29 seconds later that brought the Roadrunners within three.  Griffin added a free position goal with 6:51 remaining to make it 10-8.

The Roadrunners outshot the Privateers 10-3 in the final period, but were unable to put another one past Koenig.  Bethany Glaser had a shot hit the crossbar with 47 seconds left, then Ramapo earned a free position attempt with 17 seconds to go.  Koenig made the stop, though, and the rebound went wide.  Maritime backed up the shot and was awarded possession, allowing the Privateers to run out the clock.

Koenig (3-0) finished with 11 saves in the win, five of which came in the fourth quarter.  Offensively, Morgan Tracy (Cambridge, MD) paced the Privateers with three goals and an assist.  Emily Commodore (Tinton Falls, NJ) also scored three times, while Jenna Lesiewicz (Wading River, NJ) had two goals and an assist to along with five draw controls, four ground balls and four caused turnovers.  Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) notched team-highs with seven draw controls and five ground balls, and Kathryn Sandford (Floral Park, NY) collected four ground balls.  As a team, the Privateers gathered 32 ground balls and caused 14 turnovers.

For the Roadrunners, Griffin led the way with three goals and two assists.  She added four ground balls and four draw controls.  Whitney scored two goals and picked up four ground balls, while Erin Smeilus also found the back of the net twice.  Ella Shade tallied four ground balls of her own to go along with two assists.  Ramapo goalkeeper Danielle Indomenico (1-2) faced 34 Maritime shots and was credited with 12 saves.

Maritime returns to action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. visit to New Paltz (5-0).  It will be the Privateers' first-ever meeting with the Hawks.
