NEW PALTZ, NY – The Maritime College women's lacrosse team faced New Paltz for the first time in program history on Saturday. The contest was tied 3-3 midway through the first quarter before the Hawks (6-0) went on a 6-0 run to take a 9-3 lead in an eventual 19-8 victory over the Privateers (3-1) at North Turf Field.
Morgan Tracy (Cambridge, MD) opened the scoring just 1:30 into the contest, and her second goal evened the game at 2-2 with 9:46 left in the first quarter. However, after
Emily Commodore's (Tinton Falls, NJ) tally made it 3-3 at the 8:01 mark, the Hawks ended the period on a 5-0 spurt.
Tori Gay (Whiteford, MD) and
Jenna Lesiewicz (Wading River, NY) snapped the New Paltz scoring run, but the Hawks ended the half with five straight goals to increase their advantage to 14-5.
New Paltz extended the margin to 18-6 before Maritime got back-to-back tallies from Tracy and Commodore. The Hawks' Lexi Atwater then closed out the scoring, as the Privateers were handed their first loss of the season, 19-8.
Tracy scored on all four of her shots, and she also picked up three ground balls. Commodore finished with two goals and an assist, while Lesiewicz recorded a goal, two assists, four ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY), meanwhile, controlled four draws. Goalkeeper
Tori Koenig (Roxbury, NJ) (3-1) posted nine saves.
Lexi Atwater and Morgan Atwater each had six goals and five draw controls for New Paltz. Kaitlyn Shaw tallied nine points on five goals and four assists, while Mia Baldinger handed out six assists to go along with a goal and four draw controls. Amy Whitman and Francesca Corozzo collected four ground balls apiece, as the Hawks held a 24-11 edge in that category. Gabriella Tomasso (5-0) made the start in goal and earned the win before Piper Mascaros took over in the second half.
Up next for the Privateers is a 4 p.m. matchup at Stevenson (2-4) on Wednesday. It will be Maritime's final non-conference game of the season.
