THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College women's lacrosse team and Manhattanville were tied with 4:41 left in the second quarter on Friday night. The Privateers (4-2, 1-0 Skyline) ended the first half on a 5-0 run, however, to build an 8-3 advantage in an eventual 16-5 victory over the Valiants (3-5, 0-1 Skyline) in their Skyline Conference opener at Reinhart Field.
After a
Jenna Lesiewicz (Wading River, NY) goal put Maritime up 3-2 with 4:42 remaining in the first quarter, the teams went 15 minutes without scoring before Pietra Cabral's free position tally tied it for Manhattanville. Lesiewicz found the back of the net again at the 3:50 mark, starting the Privateers' five-goal rally.
Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) capped the spurt with 12 seconds left until halftime, giving Maritime an 8-3 lead.
Lesiewicz scored on a free position attempt early in the third quarter, then Erin Flaherty brought the Vailants within 9-4. However, the Privateers responded by rattling off six straight goals to increase the margin to 15-4. Each team added another, as Maritime snapped its two-game losing streak with a 16-5 triumph.
With seven goals in the contest, Lesiewicz matched her career-high. She also had five draw controls and five caused turnovers. Nicolosi tallied six points on three goals and three assists, while
Avery Jillson Neuwirth (Croton-On-Hudson, NY) had a hat trick of her own.
Morgan Tracy (Cambridge, MD) notched two goals and an assist, and
Emily Commodore (Tinton Falls, NJ) contributed a goal and three assists.
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) paced Maritime with seven ground balls to go along with five draw controls and five caused turnovers. As a team, the Privateers were credited with 17 caused turnovers. Goalkeeper
Tori Koenig (Roxbury, NJ) (4-2), meanwhile, picked up three ground balls and made eight saves.
For Manhattanville, Meghan DeBellis led the way with two goals and an assist. Erin Flaherty gathered four ground balls and caused three turnovers, while Kaci Pierce controlled four draws. Goalkeeper Jacee Russello (2-5) took the loss after stopping nine of the Privateers' 35 shots.
On Wednesday, Maritime travels to Farmingdale (3-6, 0-0 Skyline) for a 4 p.m. matchup. Last season, the Privateers beat the Rams for the first time in program history.
