GALLOWAY, NJ – For the second time in as many games, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team traveled to New Jersey and played in miserable conditions on Saturday afternoon. It was a 3-2 contest midway through the second quarter before Stockton (3-0) scored nine straight goals to open up a 12-2 lead in an eventual 13-4 victory over the Privateers (2-2) at Stockton Turf Field.
After the Ospreys took a 2-0 lead,
Charles Gerace (Miller Place, NY) got Maritime on the board with 10:40 remaining in the second quarter. Stockton responded six seconds later, but
Parker Reilly (West Islip, NY) pulled the Privateers within 3-2 at the 7:43 mark of the period. The Ospreys scored the final three goals of the half, though, to extend their cushion to 6-2. Stockton then outscored Maritime 6-0 in the third quarter to increase its advantage to 12-2.
Gerace ended the Privateers' scoring drought at the 8:23 mark of the fourth quarter, and Reilly notched his second tally of the game with 2:40 left. Stockton added a late goal to make the final score 13-4.
Reilly and Gerace accounted for all four Maritime goals, each scoring twice.
Kieran Hendry (East Northport, NY) and
Brody Smith (Rehoboth Beach, DE), meanwhile, paced the squad with three ground balls apiece.
Jack Daresta (Massapequa, NY) and
Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) faced a combined 60 Stockton shots. Daresta (2-2) made 13 saves over 45 minutes of action, while Monahan recorded four saves and allowed just one goal in the fourth quarter.
Colin Hopkins had three goals and an assist for Stockton. Alex DeLierre also tallied four points on two goals and two assists. In addition to finding the back of the net twice, Reegan Capozzoli picked up five ground balls. Tyler Horvath won 14 faceoffs and gathered a game-high eight ground balls, as the Ospreys held a 41-16 edge in that category. Stockton forced Maritime into 17 turnovers, five of which were caused by Shane Phillips. Goalkeeper Colin Bernstein (3-0) was credited with seven saves, while Ben Blum allowed the late Reilly score.
The Privateers return to action on Wednesday, when they visit Coast Guard (1-2) at 6 p.m. Last season at Reinhart Field, Maritime beat the No. 20 Bears 10-7 for its first-ever victory over a nationally-ranked opponent.
