HOBOKEN, NJ – On Wednesday night, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team visited Stevens for the first time since the 2022 NCAA Tournament. The 17
th-ranked Ducks (2-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter and never looked back, handing the Privateers (2-1) their first loss of the season, 20-8, at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
After Stevens scored the first three goals of the game,
Parker Reilly (West Islip, NY) put Maritime on the board with a man-up tally at the 7:59 mark of the first quarter. The Ducks responded with three straight, though, to make it 6-1 before
Nick LiPuma's (Bayport, NY) first collegiate goal. Stevens ended the half on a 5-1 spurt, however, to increase its advantage to 11-3.
In the third quarter, Reilly found the back of the net twice and
Patrick Schnell (Jericho, NY) added a goal of his own to pull the Privateers within 11-6. Schnell's third tally of the game with 11:44 remaining in the fourth quarter cut Maritime's deficit to 13-8, but Stevens scored the final seven goals of the contest to pull away for a 20-8 victory.
Schnell and Reilly each had three goals and an assist, while LiPuma and
Jack Meyers (Rocky Point, NY) both scored for the first time as a Privateer. Meyers also corralled three ground balls.
Kieran Hendry (East Northport, NY) picked up a team-high five ground balls, and
Brody Smith (Rehoboth Beach, DE) collected four ground balls to go along with three caused turnovers.
Jack Daresta (Massapequa, NY) (2-1) played the first half in net and made 12 saves.
Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) was credited with 15 second-half saves.
For Stevens, Mikey Whiteside led the way with six goals. Joseph Grippo also had a hat trick, and Matthew Pergola contributed three points on two goals and an assist. Jack Savarese scored twice and added six ground balls, while Bryan Creamer gathered seven ground balls. Jackson Penn won 11 faceoffs and picked up a game-high eight ground balls, as the Ducks held a 64-36 edge in that category. Goalkeeper Kevin Holtby (2-1) saved seven Maritime shots before he was relieved by Jake Zehyer, who tallied four saves in the second half.
The Privateers return to New Jersey on Saturday, when they travel to Stockton (2-0) for a 1 p.m. matchup. It will be the second of four consecutive road games for Maritime.
