THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's lacrosse team began its 2024 season by hosting New Paltz on Wednesday night. The Privateers (1-0) had a 6-2 lead at halftime before erupting for 10 goals in the third quarter of an eventual 20-9 victory over the Hawks (0-1) at Reinhart Field.
Parker Reilly (West Islip, NY) and
Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY) combined for nine goals in the contest. Reilly scored five times and added two assists, while Tomich registered four tallies.
Charles Gerace (Miller Place, NY),
Thomas Kennedy (Orangeburg, NY) and
Jack Louer (Clifton, NJ) each found the back of the net twice, and
Charles Longo (Bellport, NY) finished with a goal and two assists.
Patrick Schnell (Jericho, NY), meanwhile, reached the 100-point milestone with a pair of assists.
Maritime jumped in front early, notching four goals in the first 10 minutes. After New Paltz pulled within 4-2, Reilly and Tomich each scored to extend the margin to 6-2 at halftime. The Privateers then outscored the Hawks 10-0 in the third quarter, with Reilly recording four tallies in the period. New Paltz's James Flanagan stopped the run of 12 straight Maritime scores before the Privateers added three more to go up 19-3. The Hawks registered six of the final seven goals to make it a final score of 20-9.
Thomas Armetta led New Paltz with three goals. Flanagan, meanwhile, had a five-point game with two goals and three assists. Ryan Scully also scored twice, and John Reese finished with a goal and two assists. Quinn Tucker paced the Hawks with seven ground balls, while starting goalkeeper Ryan Steinhart (0-1) was credited with 12 saves in 43 minutes of action. Dan Clark made two saves over the final 17 minutes.
Jack Daresta (Massapequa, NY) (1-0) played the first three quarters in goal for the Privateers and stopped eight New Paltz shots.
Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY),
Ben McGrady (Annapolis, MD) and
Cristian Scaffaro (Brookhaven, NY) all saw action between the pipes during the final 15 minutes.
Luke Caliendo (North Babylon, NY) picked up a team-best four ground balls, as Maritime held a 41-30 edge in that category. The Privateers also outshot the Hawks 56-35.
On Saturday, Maritime plays its second straight home game to open the season when Salve Regina (0-1) visits Reinhart Field for a 12 p.m. matchup.
