Privateers Topped By Hobart In 2024 Finale

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's basketball team returned from a two-week holiday break to take on Hobart in their final non-conference game of the season on Monday afternoon.  The Privateers (5-5) ended 2024 with their third straight loss, however, as the Statesmen (7-3) came away with a 77-66 victory at Riesenberg Gymnasium.

After the teams traded early baskets, Maritime went ahead 7-4 on a trey by Evan Block (Seaford, NY) at the 15:36 mark of the first half.  Hobart scored 15 of the next 20 points, though, to open up a 19-12 advantage midway through the period.  The Privateers cut it to two on Tyler Anderson's (Smithtown, NY) layup that made it 26-24 with 3:49 left until halftime, but the Statesmen ended the half on a 6-2 run to take a 32-26 lead into the locker room.

A Block free throw and an Anderson dunk brought Maritime within three, 32-29, early in the second half before Hobart used a 20-8 spurt to extend the margin to 15 points, 52-37.  After the Privateers got back within seven at 63-56 with 5:36 remaining, the Statesmen went on a 12-2 rally to open up their largest lead of the contest, 75-58.  Maritime closed the game by notching eight of the final 10 points to make the final score 77-66.

Anderson paced the Privateers with 18 points.  Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) finished with 17 points and five rebounds, while Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) had 12 points and five assists.  Jovan Germain (Brooklyn, NY) added seven points off the bench for Maritime, which shot a combined 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the field.  The Privateers went 8-for-28 (28.6 percent) from three-point land and 12-for-14 (85.7 percent) at the charity stripe.

Pat Healy led four Statesmen in double-figures with 17 points.  He added three assists and two steals.  Alex Moesch tallied 16 points, while Hunter Meshanic and Allen Mordi contributed 10 points apiece.  Carter Meshanic grabbed eight rebounds to go along with six assists, and Aidan Rodgers handed out seven assists.  As a team, Hobart shot 62.3 percent (33-of-53) from the floor, 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from downtown, and 50 percent (1-of-2) at the free throw line.

On Saturday, Maritime (1-0 Skyline) resumes its Skyline Conference schedule by visiting St. Joseph's LI (2-8, 1-0 Skyline) at 1 p.m.  The Privateers' final 15 games are all conference contests.
