Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Maritime Starts New Year With Victory at St. Joseph’s LI

PATCHOGUE, NY – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime College men's basketball team traveled to St. Joseph's LI for its first game of 2025.  The Privateers (6-5, 2-0 Skyline) led by as many as 17 points in the first half before holding on for a 67-63 victory over the Golden Eagles (2-9, 1-1 Skyline) to snap a three-game losing streak.

After St. Joseph's LI scored the first basket of the contest, a layup by Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) started a 17-4 Maritime run that gave the Privateers an 11-point advantage barely five minutes into the game.  The Golden Eagles trimmed their deficit to seven at 21-14 midway through the period, but a Jovan Germain (Brooklyn, NY) sparked a 15-5 spurt that extended the margin to 36-19 with 4:31 left until halftime.  St. Joseph's LI ended the half on a 14-4 rally, though, to pull within 40-33 at the break.

The Golden Eagles scored the first five points of the second half, as well, to make it a 40-38 game.  However, Maritime responded with a 5-0 run of its own to push the lead back to seven points, 45-38.  After St. Joseph's LU rallied to tie the score at 47-47, Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) sank a three to start a 9-2 spurt that restored the Privateers' seven-point edge, 59-52.

St. Joseph's LI got within one at 60-59 before Devaney was fouled on a jumper and added the free throw to give Maritime a 63-59 advantage.  After a layup by the Golden Eagles' Spencer Malloy, Evan Block (Seaford, NY) nailed a trey on the other end.  A Malloy layup made it a one-possession game, but Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) hit a free throw with 14 seconds remaining to close out the 67-63 win.

Devaney paced the Privateers with a game-high 18 points.  He also tallied four steals.  Noble finished with 14 points, and Block had 11 points to go along with eight rebounds.  Murphy recorded eight points and four steals, while Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) distributed six assists.  As a team, Maritime shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the field, 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from long range, and 64.7 percent (11-of-17) at the free throw line.

For St. Joseph's LI, Malloy led the way with 12 points and seven rebounds.  Ryan McNeely posted 11 points off the bench, while Justin Forest notched 10 points and six assists.  Anthony Todd grabbed seven boards and added nine points for the Golden Eagles, who shot a combined 44.8 percent (26-of-58) from the floor.  St. Joseph's LI was just 5-for-22 (22.7 percent) from downtown and 6-for-11 (54.5 percent) at the charity stripe.

Maritime returns to Riesenberg Gymnasium on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. matchup with Merchant Marine (5-6, 1-1 Skyline).  It will be the Privateers' only home contest in a five-game stretch.
