ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – After dropping its first game of the Seahawk Holiday Classic on Saturday, the Maritime College men's basketball team took the court again less than 24 hours later for a showdown with host St. Mary's (MD). Playing on back-to-back days for the only time this season, the Privateers (5-4) suffered a 78-51 loss to the Seahawks (6-4) at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics and Recreation Center on Sunday.
Maritime took an early 4-3 lead, but St. Mary's (MD) immediately countered with a 15-4 run to open up an 18-8 advantage. The Privateers got back within six at 26-20 before the Seahawks rattled off seven consecutive points to extend the margin to 33-20. Buckets by
Jovan Germain (Brooklyn, NY) and
Jesse Tricario (New Hyde Park, NY) in the final minute of the half trimmed Maritime's deficit to 33-24 at the break.
Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) cut it to six with a trey 40 seconds into the second half. St. Mary's (MD) responded with a 24-6 spurt, though, to increase its lead to 57-33. The gap reached as many as 28 points before the Seahawks closed out a 78-51 victory.
Murphy, who had a career-high 31 points against Notre Dame (MD), notched 19 points on Sunday.
Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) finished with 10 points, while
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) registered seven points.
Evan Block (Seaford, NY) pulled down a team-best four rebounds. The Privateers were held to 28.6 percent shooting both overall (14-of-49) and from three-point range (4-of-14). Maritime went 19-for-29 (65.5 percent) at the charity stripe.
Yassine Idrissa posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead five Seahawks in double figures. Jake Koverman contributed 14 points and Tjay Beckles had 13 points. Kyree Smith, meanwhile, finished with 11 points, nine boards, six assists and two blocks. Jaden Walker had 10 points, and James Lerner handed out six assists to go along with seven points. As a team, St. Mary's (MD) shot 55.8 percent (29-of-52) from the floor, 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from downtown, and 78.6 percent (11-of-14) at the free throw line.
The Privateers now have two weeks off before returning to action. Maritime's final game of 2024 will be a 2 p.m. matchup against Hobart (5-3) at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Monday, Dec. 30.
