ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – The Maritime College men's basketball team opened the Seahawk Holiday Classic with a matchup against Notre Dame (MD) on Saturday. The Privateers (5-3) battled back from an 18-point deficit to within three with 1:15 left, but ultimately fell to the Gators (3-5) by an 80-74 count at St. Mary's (MD)'s Michael P. O'Brien Athletics and Recreation Center.
Maritime began the game with back-to-back three-pointers by
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) and
Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) and had a 12-6 advantage after less than five minutes. However, the Gators responded with seven straight points to pull in front, 13-12. The Privateers regained the lead at 16-15 before Notre Dame (MD) went on a 23-5 run to open up a 38-21 cushion. The Gators held a 14-point edge, 46-32, at halftime.
After Notre Dame (MD) extended the margin to a game-high 18 points at 56-38, Maritime went on an 11-4 run to get back within 60-49. A pair of
Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) free throws made it an eight-point game, 66-58, with 6:41 left. The Gators regained an 11-point edge at 73-62 before an Anderson trey started a 10-2 rally that brought the Privateers within two, 75-72, at the 1:15 mark. Maritime would get no closer, though, as Notre Dame (MD) held on for an 80-74 win.
Murphy
finished with a career-high 31 points. Devaney, meanwhile, recorded his first career double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds.
Jovan Germain (Brooklyn, NY) contributed eight points off the bench, and
Evan Block (Seaford, NY) grabbed eight boards while also handing out three assists. Maritime shot 41.8 percent (23-of-55) from the field and outrebounded Notre Dame (MD) 43-39. The Privateers were 4-for-15 (26.7 percent) from downtown and 24-for-35 (68.6 percent) at free throw line.
Five different Gators reached double-figures in the scoring column, led by 12 points apiece from Corwin Holland II, Chandler Johnson and Anthony Wright. Wright added five rebounds and three steals. Jermaine Koger Jr. tallied 10 points and nine boards, while Ahmad Harrison also notched 10 points. As a team, Notre Dame (MD) shot 44.9 percent (31-of-69) from the floor, 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from long range, and 59.1 percent (13-of-22) at the charity stripe.
On Sunday, the Privateers wrap up the event by taking on host St. Mary's (MD) (5-4) at 3 p.m.
