Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Privateers Open Season With Victory

THROGGS NECK, NY – Dmarco Barnes got a win in his debut as Interim Head Coach of the Maritime College men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon.  With a 71-59 triumph over York (0-1) at Riesenberg Gymnasium, the Privateers (1-0) began the season with a victory for the third consecutive season and won their home opener for the eighth straight time.

The Cardinals scored the first four points of the game and led 7-3 before Maritime got layups from Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) and Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) to tie the score.  Devany then gave the Privateers their first advantage, 12-9, with a three-pointer at the 16:22 mark.  That trey started a 9-2 Maritime run, as the Privateers opened up an 18-11 cushion.

After York pulled within two at 28-26, Maritime went on a 10-2 run, bringing the margin back to eight points, 38-30, on a Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) trey with 4:41 left in the first half.  The Cardinals trimmed their deficit to one, 40-39, before Noble hit a three-pointer as the halftime buzzer sounded, putting the Privateers up 43-39 at the break.

York tied the score at 43-43 early in the second half, but Maritime again responded, using a 10-4 rally to build a 53-47 cushion.  The Privateers led 58-54 when Devaney sank a jumper with 6:01 remaining to start a 6-0 run that extended the margin to 10 points, 64-54.  A Devaney layup gave Maritime its largest advantage of the game, 70-58, before each team drained a free throw to make it a 71-59 final.

Devaney finished with 21 points and eight rebounds in is first game as a Privateer.  He also tallied three blocks.  Noble had 20 points, six boards, four assists and three steals, while Murphy just missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds.  Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) contributed seven points and Evan Block (Seaford, NY) secured five boards.  James O'Connell (East Williston, NY), meanwhile, distributed four assists off the bench.  As a team, Maritime shot 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the field, 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from long range, and 43.5 percent (10-of-23) at the foul line.

For the Cardinals, Rohan Singh led the way with 14 points while adding five assists and three steals.  Aidony Nivar posted 13 points and six rebounds, and Bryan Godette had six boards to go along with eight points and three blocks.  Brandon Barrett and Adrian Owusu grabbed nine rebounds apiece, as York held a 47-35 edge on the glass.  The Cardinals shot a combined 41.3 percent (26-of-63) as a team, but were just 3-for-21 (14.3 percent) from three-point land and 4-for-10 (40 percent) at the charity stripe.
