THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's basketball team tied the single-game program records for three-pointers (14) and assists (27) on Wednesday night, as the Privateers (2-0) cruised to a 96-64 win over Medgar Evers (0-3) at Riesenberg Gymnasium.  Fourteen different players scored for Maritime in the victory, led by 
Jake Murphy's (Rockville Centre, NY) 22 points on a perfect 9-for-9 shooting (including 4-for-4 on three-pointers).
Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks, while 
James O'Connell (East Williston, NY) tallied 10 points.  
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY), 
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) and 
Spiro Venetis (Manhasset, NY) contributed nine points apiece, and 
Amadou Kouyate (Harlem, NY) distributed six assists.  
Evan Block (Seaford, NY), meanwhile, grabbed a game-high 10 boards.  The Privateers shot 54.5 percent (36-of-66) from the field, 46.7 percent (14-of-30) from downtown, and 66.7 percent (10-of-15) at the free throw line.
Murphy sank a layup and a trey in the first 47 seconds of the contest, prompting an early Medgar Evers timeout.  The Privateers led 12-8 when back-to-back O'Connell buckets started a 17-5 run that extended the margin to 29-13 midway through the first half.  Maritime's advantage reached 30 points at 49-19, and it was a 53-27 game at halftime.  In the first half, the Privateers went 9-for-14 from two-point range and 9-for-14 from three-point range.
After a Devaney jumper with 17:16 left made it 63-31, the Cougars used a 12-4 rally to trim their deficit to 24 points, 67-43.  Murphy countered with five straight points, though, to increase Maritime's lead to 72-43.  The cushion reached a game-high 35 points, 96-61, when Venetis sank the Privateers' 13
th and 14
th three-pointers of the contest in the final minute, and the final margin was 96-64.  The 96 points were Maritime's most since a 97-90 overtime win at Purchase on Feb. 15, 2022.
For Medgar Evers, Ryan Panagakos led the way with 17 points.  Daniel McCollum added nine points, while Andre Evans Jr. recorded eight points, three assists and six steals off the bench.  Joash Beaton and Christian Moran each pulled down five rebounds for the Cougars, who shot 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the floor.  Medgar Evers went just 4-for-22 (18.3 percent) from three-point land and was 14-for-22 (63.6 percent) at the charity stripe.
On Friday, the Privateers wrap up their season-opening three-game homestand by welcoming Hunter (1-1) to Riesenberg Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. matchup.
