THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's basketball team scored the first nine points of the game and never looked back on Friday night. The Privateers (3-0) led by as many as 33 points in the wire-to-wire 91-68 victory over Hunter (1-2) at Riesenberg Gymnasium. Maritime didn't trail for the second straight game and had consecutive 90-point efforts for the first time since the 2016-17 season.
Five Privateers reached double-figures in the scoring column, led by
Theo Noble's (Bronx, NY) 16 points.
Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, while
Evan Block (Seaford, NY) registered 11 points, nine boards and five assists.
Jovan Germain (Brooklyn, NY) had 12 points, six assists and three steals off the bench, and
Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) contributed 10 points.
Amadou Kouyate (Harlem, NY), meanwhile, tallied eight points and six rebounds.
Devaney notched the first six points of the game before Noble hit a trey with 14:33 left in the first half. Hunter didn't make a field goal until the 11:58 mark, at which point the Privateers already held a 17-4 advantage. Maritime followed with an 8-0 run to extend its cushion to 25-4 midway through the first half. After the Hawks rallied back within 12 at 41-29, Anderson sank a three just before halftime to put the Privateers in front 44-29 at the break.
In the second half, Maritime got back-to-back triples from Noble and Murphy to start a 26-8 spurt that increased the margin to a game-high 33 points, 70-37. Hunter trimmed its deficit to 89-68 with 1:09 to go, then a layup by
Frank Sweeney (Rockville Centre, NY) capped the scoring in the Privateers' 91-68 triumph.
Maritime shot 47.4 percent (36-of-76) from the field and held a 47-36 edge on the glass. The Privateers were 12-for-30 (40 percent) from three-point range and 7-for-14 (50 percent) at the charity stripe. Maritime has drained a combined 26 three-pointers and distributed 49 assists over its last two games.
For Hunter, Sal Saputo led the way with 13 points and nine rebounds. Kevin Caminero added nine points, and Enzo Caceres-Roussel handed out four assists. The Hawks shot 39.7 percent (23-of-58) from the floor, 39.1 percent (9-of-23) from downtown, and 72.2 percent (13-of-18) at the free throw line.
After playing their first three games at home, the Privateers hit the road for each of their next three. Maritime begins the stretch with a 7 p.m. visit to John Jay (2-1) on Wednesday.
