Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Privateers Now 4-0 After Knocking Off John Jay

NEW YORK – For the second straight season, the Maritime College men's basketball team is off to a 4-0 start.  The Privateers played their first road game of the season on Wednesday night and finished the contest on a 9-4 run over the final 1:35 to notch a 78-73 victory over John Jay (3-2) at the Doghouse.

It was tied at 69-69 when Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) sank a trey from the left elbow.  After a John Jay turnover, a layup by Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) increased Maritime's lead to five, 74-69, with 1:00 left.  Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) added a free throw to make it a six-point game, and the Privateers went 3-for-4 at the line down the stretch to finish off the 78-73 triumph.

Anderson posted a team-high 20 points to go along with six rebounds.  Amadou Kouyate (Harlem, NY) tallied 14 points and eight boards off the bench, while Devaney had 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists.  Murphy chipped in 13 points and three steals, and Evan Block (Seaford, NY) posted 11 boards and four steals.  Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) pulled down six rebounds, as the Privateers held a 49-40 edge on the glass.  Maritime shot 25-for-67 (37.3 percent) overall, but was just 6-for-24 (25 percent) from three-point land.  The Privateers went 22-for-28 (78.6 percent) at the charity stripe.

Maritime scored the first five points of the game and had a 13-5 lead after just 4:30.  The Privateers extended the margin to 24-13 midway through the period before a Syl Granda three-pointer started an 8-0 run for the Bloodhounds.  John Jay eventually tied it at 37-37, but Jovan Germain (Brooklyn, NY) sank a trey with 41 seconds left in the period to give Maritime a 40-37 halftime cushion.

The Bloodhounds opened the second half on a 9-2 rally to take a 46-42 advantage.  After a Germain three-pointer forced a 50-50 tie, Jamir Stewart hit a trey on the other end.  However, two Kouyate free throws and a Devaney layup put the Privateers back in front.  John Jay regained the lead on a Jeremiah Cardi three-pointer before Kouyate drained a pair of foul shots to start a 6-0 Maritime rally.  The Privateers eventually pushed the margin to seven points, 67-60, but the Bloodhounds responded with a 7-0 spurt to again level the score with 2:42 left.

Stewart led John Jay with 24 points, and he added three assists.  Keyshawn Miller recorded 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while Granda contributed 12 points.  Emmanuel Adenekan had eight blocks to go along with six boards.  Jordan Evelyn, meanwhile, finished with five rebounds and four assists.  As a team, the Bloodhounds shot 33.9 percent (21-of-62) from the floor, 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from downtown, and 71 percent (22-of-31) at the free throw line.

On Saturday, Maritime hits the road again for a 1 p.m. matchup at William Paterson (2-2).  Last season, the Pioneers earned an 86-79 victory over the Privateers at Riesenberg Gymnasium in the first-ever meeting between the schools.
