WAYNE, NJ – The Maritime College men's basketball team entered Saturday's game looking for its first-ever 5-0 start. The Privateers (4-1) had the lead at halftime, but ultimately fell to William Paterson (3-2) by a 64-52 count at the Sports and Recreation Center.
After the Pioneers took an early 6-5 lead, Maritime went on an 8-1 run to open up a 13-7 advantage. The Privateers were still in front, 20-14, when William Paterson used a 6-0 rally to level the score at 20-20 with 4:23 left until halftime. Maritime regained a five-point edge, 27-22, before David Martinez hit a trey to bring the Pioneers within two, 27-25, at the break.
Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) scored the first four points of the second half, as the Privateers pushed the margin to 31-25. Maritime eventually extended the lead to nine points at 38-29 before William Paterson responded with nine straight points to tie it, 38-38. After a
James O'Connell (East Williston, NY) free throw put the Privateers back in front, the Pioneers got a three-pointer from Jianni Moran on the other end to start a 17-2 run that gave them a 55-41 advantage. Maritime got back within seven at 59-52, but would pull no closer, as William Paterson ended the game with five straight points to seal a 64-52 victory.
Devaney finished with a career-high 22 points, and he added six rebounds.
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) contributed nine points, five boards and three assists, while
Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) had eight points.
Evan Block (Seaford, NY) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, and
Amadou Kouyate (Harlem, NY) collected nine boards, as the Privateers held a 44-37 edge on the glass.
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY), meanwhile, registered five assists and four steals. As a team, Maritime shot 29.7 percent (19-of-64) from the field, 25 percent (6-of-24) from three-point land, and 72.7 percent (8-of-11) at the free throw line.
For the Pioneers, Andre Wells led the way with 22 points. He also secured seven rebounds. Neftali Valentin tallied 10 points and seven boards to go along with four assists and three steals. Tim Gjonballa notched eight points and three blocks, while Martinez secured eight rebounds. William Paterson shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the floor, but was just 5-for-21 (23.8 percent) from long range. The Pioneers shot 68.6 percent (11-of-16) at the charity stripe.
On Tuesday, Maritime travels to West Point at 7 p.m. for an exhibition contest against Army. It will mark the second straight year in which the Privateers and Black Knights are meeting in an exhibition game.
