Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Privateers Drop Exhibition Contest at Army

WEST POINT, NY – In last year's exhibition matchup at Army, the Maritime College men's basketball team scored just six points in the first half.  This season, the Privateers held the lead eight minutes into the game.  Maritime was unable to maintain that advantage, however, as the Black Knights (4-3) pulled away for a 91-52 exhibition victory at Christl Arena.

The teams traded baskets over the first eight minutes.  Army opened the scoring with a three-pointer before the Privateers got back-to-back baskets from Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) and Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) to pull in front.  The Black Knights regained a four-point advantage at 10-6, but Maritime responded with a Devaney jumper and a Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) trey take an 11-10 edge.  Overall, there were 12 lead changes in the opening eight minutes of the contest.

After Amadou Kouyate's (Harlem, NY) layup gave the Privateers a 17-16 lead, Army went on an 11-4 run to open up a six-point cushion, 27-21.  Maritime got back within one at 29-28 before the Black Knights rattled off 12 of the next 15 points to build a 10-point gap, 41-31.  The margin was 13 points, 51-38, at the break.

Army then opened the second half on an 18-6 spurt to extend its lead to 69-44.  The Black Knights gradually increased their advantage the rest of the way, sealing a 39-point, 91-52 win.  Army held Maritime to just 14 points and 18.8 percent (6-of-32) shooting, including 0-for-14 from beyond the arc in the second half.

Jovan Germain (Brooklyn, NY) led the Privateers with 21 points, including 17 in the first half.  He went 8-for-12 from the field and 4-for-5 from three-point land.  Devaney finished with 10 points and six rebounds, while Anderson had eight points and five boards.  Evan Block (Seaford, NY) contributed six rebounds, and James O'Connell (East Williston, NY) handed out three assists.  Maritime shot 33.8 percent (22-of-65) from the floor overall, but just 19.2 percent (5-of-26) from downtown.  The Privateers were 3-for-6 (50 percent) at the charity stripe.

For Army, AJ Allenspach had a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds.  Josh Scovens tallied 16 points and three blocks, and Blake Barker registered 15 points to go along with four steals.  Jalen Rucker was the fourth Black Knight in double figures with 12 points.  He also distributed five assists.  As a team, Army shot 53.1 percent (34-of-64) from the field, 33.3 percent (10-of-30) from long range, and 65 percent (13-of-20) at the free throw line.  The Black Knights outrebounded the Privateers 46-32.

Maritime (4-1) will now have a week off before returning to action.  The Privateers host CCNY (1-2) next Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m.
