THROGGS NECK, NY – After trailing CCNY by as many as 22 points, the Maritime College men's basketball team rallied within six in the final minute on Tuesday night. The Privateers (4-2) ultimately came up short, however, as the Beavers (3-2) held on for a 90-83 victory at Riesenberg Gymnasium.
CCNY scored the first six points of the game and led 12-2 after just three minutes. The Beavers made 12 of their first 16 shots en route to opening up a 29-13 advantage midway through the first half. After CCNY extended the margin to 39-17, Maritime went on an 8-2 run to trim its deficit to 16 points, 41-25, with 1:28 left until halftime. The Beavers led 44-25 at the break.
It was still a 19-point game, 48-29, when
Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) sank a trey to start a 21-10 rally that brought the Privateers within 58-50 at the 12:01 mark of the second half. A Murphy layup cut the difference to five points at 63-58 before CCNY responded with a 15-6 spurt that pushed its lead back to 78-64 with 4:51 remaining.
Maritime again came storming back, hitting seven of its next nine shots to pull within six, 87-81, with 22 seconds left. The Privateers would get no closer, though, as the Beavers capped the 90-83 victory by scoring their last six points at the foul line. Maritime shot 69.7 percent (23-of-33) overall and 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from beyond the arc in the second half, outscoring CCNY 58-46 in the period.
Murphy
had all of his game-high 26 points in the second half. He also pulled down five rebounds.
Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) finished with 20 points and five boards, while
Jovan Germain (Brooklyn, NY) contributed 13 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Amadou Kouyate (Harlem, NY) added eight points, five boards and three assists.
Jesse Tricario (New Hyde Park, NY), meanwhile, secured a team-best eight rebounds. Overall, the Privateers shot 47.8 percent (32-of-67) from the field, 33.3 percent (10-of-30) from long range, and 69.2 percent (9-of-13) at the charity stripe.
For the Beavers, Edward Beqiri led the way with 23 points to go along with eight rebounds. Justin Morety notched 21 points and four assists, while Chris Stone recorded 15 points, seven boards, three assists and five steals. Ricardo Dixon chipped in 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds for CCNY, which had a 38-34 edge on the glass. As a team, the Beavers shot 48.4 percent (31-of-64) from the floor, 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from downtown, and 72.4 percent (21-of-29) at the free throw line.
On Saturday, Maritime (0-0 Skyline) opens its Skyline Conference slate by hosting defending champion Farmingdale (2-4, 0-0 Skyline) at 1 p.m.
