PURCHASE, NY – For the second time in three matches, the Maritime College volleyball team went to five sets on Tuesday. For the second time in three matches, the Privateers won in five. After dropping the fourth set, Maritime (6-19, 3-7 Skyline) led the fifth wire-to-wire to earn a 10-25, 25-22, 25-21, 11-25, 15-9 victory over Purchase (6-14, 3-7 Skyline) at Purchase College Gymnasium.
Maritime had a 2-1 lead in the match heading into the fourth set. However, after the teams traded the first six points of the stanza, Purchase went on a 10-2 run to open up a 13-5 advantage. A block by
Samantha Hart (Brooklyn, NY) and
Soraya Hall (Valrico, FL) got the Privateers within 15-8, but the Panthers ended the set by claiming 10 of the final 13 points to earn a 25-11 win and send the match into a decisive frame.
In the fifth set,
Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) served first, and she didn't stop until Maritime had a 6-0 lead. She recorded five aces during the rally. Purchase cut its deficit to three at 8-5 before a service error and a Devaney kill made it 10-5. The Panthers responded with a 3-1 spurt to again pull within three, 11-8, but Devaney smashed a kill to spark a 4-1 Privateers run. A kill by
Karelys Rolon (Hudson, FL) finished off the set, 15-9, and Maritime's third 3-2 win of the season.
Hall paced the Privateers with 13 kills, and she added three blocks.
Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) and
Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) each notched a double-double. Pavarini had 14 assists and 13 digs, while Thiel finished with 11 assists and 10 digs.
Alexa Nolan (Queens, NY) contributed 11 digs and
Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) tallied eight digs. Devaney, meanwhile, posted six kills and six digs to go along with her five aces.
After the Panthers jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first set, Maritime claimed the next two points to tie the score at 3-3. Purchase rattled off 18 of the next 22 points, though, to build a 21-7 advantage. The Panthers hit .429 (12 kills, three errors, 21 attempts) in the opening frame en route to an easy 25-10 win.
Purchase then took the first four points of the second set. The Privateers rallied to force a 10-10 tie before the Panthers used a 6-2 spurt to regain a four-point advantage, 16-12, and prompt Maritime Head Coach
John O'Donoghue to call timeout. After the timeout, the Privateers went on a 9-3 run to go ahead, 21-19. Hall smashed a kill to close out a 25-22 set win for Maritime that leveled the match at 1-1.
The sides traded the first four points of the third set before a Pavarini kill sparked a 12-7 rally that gave the Privateers a 14-9 lead. Purchase rallied for five of the next six points to make it 15-14, but Maritime responded with six of the next seven to bring the margin back to six points, 21-15. After the Panthers got back within two, 23-21, Pavarini ripped a kill and Rolon served an ace to wrap up the set, 25-21, and give the Privateers a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Helena Carroll registered a triple-double for Purchase. She finished with 11 kills, 11 digs and 21 assists while also serving four aces. Natalia Leite nearly had a triple-double of her own with 21 assists, 14 digs and nine kills. Sadie Weiss, meanwhile, tallied 13 kills and 11 digs. Marcella Pena collected a match-high 21 digs and Lauren White ended up with 12 digs, as the Panthers held a 75-61 edge in that category.
On Thursday, the Privateers conclude the 2024 season by hosting Mount St. Mary (9-18, 5-5 Skyline) at Riesenberg Gymnasium. Maritime's two seniors—Cordero
and Hart—will be honored prior to the 7 p.m. match.
