Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) and
Samantha Hart (Brooklyn, NY) were honored prior to the Maritime College volleyball team's final match of the season on Thursday night. In the 2024 finale, the Privateers (6-20, 3-8 Skyline) dropped a 25-17, 25-14, 25-15 decision to Mount St. Mary (10-18, 6-5 Skyline) at Riesenberg Gymnasium.
Mount St. Mary jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set before the Privateers scored three straight points to get within 5-4. Maritime still trailed by one, 8-7, after a
Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) kill, but the Knights responded with a 9-3 run to increase its margin to 17-10. The Privateers countered with a four-point rally of their own to trim the deficit to three, 17-14. Maritime would get no closer, though, as Mount St. Mary tallied eight of the final 11 points to claim the set, 25-17.
The Knights then opened the second set on a 17-6 spurt. Maritime used a 4-1 run to pull within 18-10 before Mount St. Mary rattled off six of the next seven points. The Privateers fought off three set points on an
Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) kill and a pair of
Soraya Hall (Valrico, FL) service aces, but the Knights took the frame by a 25-14 count to go up 2-0 in the match.
In the third set, there were five early ties. Mount St. Mary broke the last of those deadlocks, 8-8, with a 10-2 run that made the score 18-10. Maritime scored the next three points to cut its deficit to 18-13, but would pull no closer. The Knights notched a 25-15 third-set win to finish off the sweep and clinch a place in the Skyline Conference Tournament.
Devaney paced the Privateers with seven kills and 14 digs. Pavarini, meanwhile, had seven kills, eight digs and six assists. Hall contributed six kills, and
Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) dished out 12 assists. Cordero finished with 10 digs, giving her a career total of 826, second-most in school history.
For the Knights, Jonaiya Williams smashed 19 kills on .357 hitting to go along with nine digs. Sofia Fredericks tallied 27 assists, while Erin Lema recorded a match-high 18 digs. Mount St. Mary outdug Maritime 50-40 and hit a combined .278 (35 kills, 10 errors, 90 attempts) as a team.
This marked the first time that the Privateers ended the season at home since the 2016 season. It was also the latest match date in program history.
