THROGGS NECK, NY – For the second time this season,
Rowan Hayes (Floral Park, NY) and
Matt Klimek (Malverne, NY) of the Maritime College men's swimming & diving team have both been honored by the Skyline Conference. Hayes received his second straight Skyline Swimmer of the Week award, while Klimek was named Skyline Rookie of the Week.
Hayes has now been honored as the Skyline Swimmer of the Week three times in the last four weeks (he shared last week's award with Merchant Marine's John Frank). On Friday in the Privateers' tri-meet against St. Joseph's LI and Brooklyn, he won all three of his events. Hayes notched individual triumphs in the 100 yard butterfly (54.14) and 100 yard breaststroke (1:02.39) while also swimming on the victorious 200 yard medley relay squad.
Klimek anchored that 200 medley relay, then immediately returned to the pool for the 1000 yard freestyle, which he won in 12:13.53. He later took second in the 500 yard freestyle (5:40.85). This is Klimek's second Skyline Rookie of the Week nod. He was previously selected on Nov. 4.
The Privateer men are off until the Skyline Championships at the end of January. The Maritime women's team, meanwhile, returns to action with a dual meet against John Jay at the Riesenberg Aquatics Center on Friday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m.
