Maritime Falls at Farmingdale

FARMINGDALE, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team returned from a week-long break on Friday night with a Skyline Conference matchup at Farmingdale.  The Privateers (5-19, 2-7 Skyline) were unable to come away with their second straight win, however, as the Rams (12-7, 6-2 Skyline) notched a 25-17, 25-12, 26-24 victory at the Walter A. Lynch Sports Center.

Maritime had a 2-1 lead in the first set before Farmingdale used a 6-0 run to open up a 7-2 advantage.  After the Rams extended the margin to 19-9, the Privateers went on a 5-2 spurt to pull within 21-14.  Maritime would get no closer, though, as Farmingdale took the set by a 25-17 count.

After the Rams jumped out to a 14-3 cushion in the second set, Maritime responded with a 5-3 rally to trim its deficit to 17-8.  Farmingdale scored seven of the next nine points to increase the margin to 24-10.  The Rams claimed a 25-12 set win to go up 2-0 in the match.

In the third set, there were seven ties and three lead changes.  The Privateers notched the first three points before Farmingdale captured the next four.  The Rams still led, 8-7, when Maritime went on a 5-0 run to go ahead 13-8.  With the Privateers holding a 22-15 edge, Farmingdale rattled off nine of the next 10 points to reach match point.  Maritime fought off one match point opportunity before the Rams converted their second.  Farmingdale clinched the 3-0 victory by capturing the third set, 26-24.

Soraya Hall (Valrico, FL) paced the Privateers with seven kills, and Karelys Rolon (Hudson, FL) contributed five kills.  Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) finished with five kills, five digs and six assists, while Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) distributed a team-high 12 assists.  Maritime outdug Farmingdale 37-36, with Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) notching 10 digs and Alexa Nolan (Queens, NY) tallying eight digs.

For the Rams, Samantha Russo led the way with eight kills and 11 digs.  She also served four aces.  Sarah Rende, meanwhile, had five kills, seven digs, five aces and 14 assists.  Lana Ventura added 10 digs and five assists.  As a team, Farmingdale recorded 15 aces.

There are two matches remaining on Maritime's schedule.  The Privateers' final road contest of the season is a 6 p.m. tilt at Purchase (5-13, 2-6 Skyline) on Tuesday.
