BRONXVILLE, NY – After trailing by as many as 13 points in the second half, the Maritime College men's basketball team rallied to force overtime at Sarah Lawrence on Saturday afternoon. Down by two with 15 seconds left in the extra session, the Privateers had the ball and a chance to tie or win. Maritime (10-7, 5-3 Skyline) was unable to score, however, and the Gryphons (7-10, 4-4 Skyline) held on for a 64-62 victory at the Campbell Sports Center.
Eamon Kelly gave Sarah Lawrence the lead with 39 seconds remaining in overtime, then
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) missed a three-pointer on the other end. Chris Dougherty grabbed the rebound for the Gryphons and was immediately fouled. He missed the front end of a one-and-one and
Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) secured the carom for Maritime. After a timeout,
Aleksandar Begovic (Kotor, Montenegro) was fouled while driving for a game-tying layup. His free throws were off the mark, though, clinching the victory for Sarah Lawrence.
It was the Privateers' first overtime loss since an 81-77 defeat against Purchase on Feb. 7, 2018. Maritime had won its last three overtime contests, including a 77-73 triumph over the Gryphons last season at Riesenberg Gymnasium.
Murphy paced the Privateers with 26 points, and he added seven rebounds.
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) finished with 15 points and six boards, while Begovic pulled down 11 rebounds to go along with seven points and three steals. Maritime shot a combined 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the field, but was just 3-for-16 (18.8 percent) from long range. The Privateers went 13-for-18 (72.2 percent) at the foul line.
Maritime took an early 6-3 lead before Sarah Lawrence used a 15-8 run to open up an 18-14 advantage midway through the first half. The Gryphons extended that margin to nine points, 32-23, at halftime. Sarah Lawrence then scored the first two baskets of the second half to build its largest cushion of the game, 36-23.
A Murphy layup started the Privateers' comeback effort, as Maritime went on a 15-3 run to pull within one, 39-38. Sarah Lawrence pushed its lead back to 48-42 before the Privateers rattled off six straight points to tie it at 48-48. After a free throw put the Gryphons back in front, Anderson drove for a layup that gave Maritime its first lead since the score was 11-10.
Neither side led by more than three points the rest of the way. There were four ties over the final six minutes of regulation, the last of which coming on Murphy's layup that evened the score at 57-57 with 1:47 left. Anderson missed a trey at the 37-second mark and Sarah Lawrence's Lucas Murray secured the rebound. Murray's three-point attempt on the other end was short, but the rebound went to the Gryphons' Braden Burman. Maritime forced a turnover before Sarah Lawrence could get another shot off, though, sending the contest into overtime.
For the Gryphons, Murray had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Andrew Kim contributed 14 points and four assists, while Kelly and Burman tallied 12 points apiece. Dougherty and Derek Hickman each collected eight rebounds, as Sarah Lawrence had a 39-36 edge on the glass. The Gryphons shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the floor, 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from downtown, and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) at the charity stripe.
Up next for the Privateers is a 7 p.m. matchup with Old Westbury (0-17, 0-8 Skyline) at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Wednesday. When the sides met to open Skyline Conference play on Dec. 6, Maritime earned a 62-47 win.
