Privateers Notch Wire-to-Wire Victory Over Old Westbury

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's basketball team (11-7, 6-3 Skyline) recorded the first six points of the game and led wire-to-wire in a 79-51 win over Old Westbury (0-18, 0-9 Skyline) at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Wednesday night.  Twelve different Privateers scored in the victory.

Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) had 19 of his game-high 24 points in the first half.  He also distributed four assists.  Jovan Germain (Brooklyn, NY) finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) tallied 11 points and four assists.  Aleksandar Begovic (Kotor, Montenegro) pulled down eight boards to go along with four assists, and Evan Block (Seaford, NY) corralled seven rebounds.  As a team, Maritime shot 50 percent (30-of-60) from the field, 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from three-point land, and 54.5 percent (6-of-11) at the free throw line.

Murphy scored Maritime's first nine points, and the Privateers had a 12-2 lead not even five minutes into the contest.  After an Amadou Kouyate (Harlem, NY) layup made it 20-6 at the 12:00 mark, Old Westbury used a 12-3 run to pull within five, 23-18.  However, Block responded with a three-pointer and Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) followed with a layup to start a 10-4 rally that pushed the margin back to 11 points, 33-22.  The Privateers held a 35-24 advantage at halftime.

Maritime's cushion reached 21 points at 48-27 on Germain's bucket with 14:12 left.  Old Westbury cut the Privateers lead to 58-43 before a Kouyate layup started a 12-2 run that increased the margin to 25 points, 75-40.  A layup by Dylan Goodman (Syosset, NY) capped the scoring in Maritime's 79-51 triumph.

With the win, the Privateers swept the season series against Old Westbury for the first time in program history.  The game also snapped Maritime's streak of scoring exactly 67 points in a victory.  The Privateers had a final score of 67 in each of their last four wins since defeating the Panthers 62-47 on Dec. 6.

For Old Westbury, Michael Obi notched a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.  Jamari Williams contributed nine points, and Jordan Johnson-Rader secured five boards.  Amadi Lee-Kane, meanwhile, distributed four assists for the Panthers, who shot a combined 37 percent (20-of-54) from the floor.  Old Westbury was 4-for-11 (36.4 percent) from downtown and 7-for-12 (58.3 percent) at the charity stripe.

On Saturday, the Privateers wrap up their two-game homestand by welcoming Mount St. Vincent (7-11, 5-4 Skyline) to Riesenberg Gymnasium for a 1 p.m. matchup.
