Anderson, Begovic Lead Privateers to Win at St. Joseph’s Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, NY – Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) finished with 18 points and Aleksandar Begovic (Kotor, Montenegro) recorded his first career double-double on Tuesday night, as the Maritime College men's basketball team (10-6, 5-2 Skyline) to a 67-62 victory over St. Joseph's Brooklyn (4-12, 3-4 Skyline) at the Hill Center on Tuesday night.  Begovic tallied 16 points and 11 rebounds in the win.

Anderson hit a jumper on the first possession of the game, and Maritime held a 7-2 advantage after just three minutes.  However, after a Begovic layup made it 15-8 at the 11:55 mark of the first half, the Bears rattled off 11 straight points to take a 19-15 lead.  The Privateers tied it at 19-19 before St. Joseph's Brooklyn went on an 11-5 spurt to regain a six-point cushion, 30-24.  Chris Zaveckas (Merrick, NY) drained a three-pointer in the waning seconds of the half to cut Maritime's deficit to 32-30 at the break.

The Privateers then opened the second half on a 7-0 run to pull in front, 37-32.  St. Joseph's Brooklyn responded with five of the next seven points to level the score at 39-39 before layups by Begovic and Jovan Germain (Brooklyn, NY) again gave Maritime the lead.  After the Bears pulled even at 47-47, an Anderson trey sparked a 17-6 run that made it 64-53 in favor of the Privateers with 4:05 remaining. St. Joseph's Brooklyn trimmed the margin to four, 66-62, with 52 seconds left, but a Germain free throw sealed the 67-62 victory.

Maritime held a 47-39 edge on the glass, with Evan Block (Seaford, NY) matching a career-high with 10 boards.  Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) contributed 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists, while Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) had eight points and four assists.  As a team, the Privateers shot 38.5 percent (25-of-65) from the floor, 30.6 percent (11-of-36) from three-point range, and 66.7 percent (6-of-9) at the free throw line.

Evan Sirakis posted a game-high 19 points to go along with five assists for St. Joseph's Brooklyn.  Justin Nazon added 17 points off the bench, while Stephan Direny registered 10 points and seven rebounds.  Adam Jasaraj had 11 boards and four assists for the Bears, who shot a combined 35.8 percent (24-of-67) from the field.  The Bears were 7-for-32 (21.9 percent) from downtown and 7-for-9 (77.8 percent) at the charity stripe.

On Saturday, the Privateers conclude their two-game road trip with a 12 p.m. matchup at Sarah Lawrence (6-10, 3-4 Skyline).
