Maritime Earns First Win of Watson Era With Most Goals In Four Years

THROGGS NECK, NY – On Wednesday night, in its first home game under new Head Coach Max Watson, the Maritime College men's soccer team (1-1-0) notched a 5-1 victory over Medgar Evers (0-2-0) at Reinhart Field.  The five goals were the Privateers' most in a game since a 12-0 triumph against Webb Institute on Aug. 30, 2019.

After Medgar Evers goalkeeper Aiden Ally made several early saves, Maritime broke through in the eighth minute.  Jake Rodriguez's (Nanuet, NY) attempt was stopped and the rebound went right to the foot of Chris Vazquez (Woodhaven, NY), who put it home to give the Privateers a 1-0 lead.  It would remain that way until just before halftime, when Fanis Tsatalios (Athens, Greece) sent a rocket from 25 yards out that found the top of the net and extended Maritime's cushion to 2-0.

Jack Burkhardt (Cutchogue, NY) made it 3-0 with his 55th-minute tally, and Omar Matute (Bayville, NY) netted Maritime's fourth goal four minutes later.  In the 87th minute, Matute added another after getting free inside the box and beating Ally one-on-one.  The Cougars were able to avoid the shutout in the final minute, however, as Isaac Akindipe's perfectly-placed free kick went right to Taye Simon, who headed it in to close out the scoring in Maritime's 5-1 win.

The Privateers outshot the Cougars 38-4, including a 14-1 edge in shots on goal.  Maritime also held a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Matute became the first Privateer with a brace since Thomas Kropp scored both goals in a 2-1 win at Purchase on Oct. 9, 2021.  Vazquez, meanwhile, notched the first goal of his collegiate career.  Augusto Lebron (Valley Stream, NY) (1-1-0) earned the win in net, playing the first 74 minutes before giving way to Miles Mitidieri (St. Augustine, FL).

Ally (0-2-0) was credited with nine saves in a losing effort for Medgar Evers.  Simon's goal was the Cougars' first this season.

Up next for the Privateers is the annual matchup with rival Mass Maritime (1-1-0).  Maritime will visit the Buccaneers at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
