BUZZARDS BAY, MA – The Maritime College men's soccer team played its annual matchup against rival Mass Maritime on Saturday afternoon. After the squads scored a combined four goals over the first 13:32 of the contest, the final 76-plus minutes were scoreless, and the Privateers (1-1-1) settled for a 2-2 draw with the Buccaneers (1-1-1) at Clean Harbors Stadium.
CJ Vincent put Mass Maritime on the board off a free kick just 68 seconds into the game. The Privateers quickly responded, though, earning a corner kick in the fifth minute that was taken by
Jude Callan (Centerport, NY). His perfectly-placed strike found
Ege Ozaman (Queens, NY), who put it home to tie the score at 1-1.
Maritime took the lead five minutes later. Callan again set up the goal, this time finding
Chris Vazquez (Woodhaven, NY). After
George Kanellopoulos (Bayside, NY) saw his attempt saved in the 14
th minute, Mass Maritime went on the counterattack, and Brody Calvert slipped one past
Augusto Lebron (Valley Stream, NY), knotting the game at 2-2.
Despite several quality scoring chances by each side, that's how it would remain. The 2-2 tie was Maritime's first draw since a 1-1 decision against Old Westbury last season and improved the Privateers to 2-1-1 all-time against the Buccaneers.
Ozaman's goal was the first of his collegiate career. Vazquez, meanwhile, scored for the second consecutive game. Lebron (1-1-1) was credited with four saves for the Privateers, and Kaden Winter (1-1-1) made six saves for the Buccaneers.
On Tuesday, the Privateers begin a two-game homestand by taking on York (0-1-1) at 4:30 p.m. It will be the first game of a Maritime soccer doubleheader. The women's team (2-1-0, 0-0-0 Skyline) faces Yeshiva (0-4-0, 0-4-0 Skyline) in its Skyline Conference opener following the men's game at 7 p.m.
