Privateers Open 2023 Season With Loss at SUNY Delhi

DELHI, NY – After playing an exhibition game against Virginia Military Academy on Saturday, the Maritime College men's soccer team officially began the Max Watson Era with a visit to SUNY Delhi on Sunday night.  In the first-ever meeting between the squads, the Broncos (1-0-0) earned a 2-0 victory over the Privateers (0-1-0) at SUNY Delhi Soccer Field.

SUNY Delhi took the lead in the 23rd minute, when Roberto Velasquez-Osorio slipped one past Augusto Lebron (Valley Stream, NY).  Despite outshooting the Privateers 13-2 in the first half, the Broncos were unable to find another goal and took a 1-0 lead into the break.  SUNY Delhi then doubled its advantage on Anthony Cuellar's 54th-minute tally.  Chris Vazquez (Woodhaven, NY) had a shot blocked in the 55th minute, which represented Maritime's best scoring chance in the 2-0 defeat.

The Privateers were held to just four shots, two by Vasquez and one each by Jack Burkhardt (Cutchogue, NY) and George Kanellopoulos (Bayside, NY).  Lebron (0-1-0) made one save in the loss.

Erik Kleczkowski assisted on both SUNY Delhi goals.  Jonathan Walch (1-0-0), meanwhile, was credited with the shutout between the pipes.

Maritime's home opener is scheduled for Wednesday night, when Medgar Evers (0-1-0) comes to Reinhart Field for a 7:30 p.m. matchup.
