BRONXVILLE, NY – Three days after dropping a five-set thriller to St. Joseph's Brooklyn, the Maritime College volleyball team returned to action on Thursday. The Privateers (3-8, 1-3 Skyline) took on Sarah Lawrence (6-4, 3-0 Skyline) at the Campbell Sports Center, but fell by a score of 25-19, 25-17, 25-14.
Sarah Lawrence jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set, but Maritime won three straight points to pull within one. After the Gryphons extended the margin to 15-9, the Privateers went on a 5-0 rally to again trim its deficit to one point, 15-14. Sarah Lawrence responded with a 10-5 run, though, to wrap up a 25-19 set win.
There were seven ties in the second set. Maritime built a 9-6 advantage before Sarah Lawrence rallied to go ahead 13-11. After the Privateers took the next two points to even the score at 13-13, the Gryphons rattled off five straight to open up an 18-13 cushion. Consecutive service aces by Georgi Massey closed out the set, 25-17, as Sarah Lawrence took a 2-0 lead in the match.
Early in the third set, Maritime used a 5-0 run to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 6-3 advantage. Sarah Lawrence regained the lead at 12-9 before the Privateers claimed the next two points to get back within one, 12-11. Maritime would get no closer, though. The Gryphons ended the match by winning 13 of the final 16 points to finish off the third set, 25-14, and the 3-0 victory.
Erica Pagano (Lawrence, NY) and
Jessica Mele (Southold, NY) led the Privateers with eight kills apiece. Pagano also notched 13 digs.
Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) had a team-high 15 digs, while
Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) distributed 13 assists to go along with seven digs and two blocks.
For the Gryphons, Athena Kazos finished with six kills and nine digs. Mia Rector handed out 19 assists, and Massey recorded six of Sarah Lawrence's 15 aces. Kaille Ferguson tallied 15 digs, while Tabitha Hardin-Zollo added 11 digs and three assists.
After playing two straight Skyline matches, Maritime resumes its non-conference schedule on Monday. The Privateers visit Baruch (4-5) for a 6 p.m. contest.
