Privateers Come Up Short Against St. Joseph’s LI

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's soccer team (3-2-2, 0-1-1 Skyline) saw its five-game unbeaten streak come to an end with a 2-1 loss to St. Joseph's LI (4-4-0, 1-2-0 Skyline) at a soggy Reinhart Field on Saturday afternoon.  It was the Privateers' first defeat since falling to SUNY Delhi in the season opener on Sept. 3.

St. Joseph's LI struck early, getting a goal from Connor Owenburg in the fifth minute.  Maritime drew even in the 22nd minute, though, when George Kanellopoulos (Bayside, NY) sent a cross from the left side to Justin Song (Syosset, NY), who headed in his third tally of the year.  The Privateers nearly took the lead in the 30th minute, but Jude Callan's (Centerport, NY) shot was stopped by Golden Eagles goalkeeper Giuseppe Vitale.

In the second half, the rain picked up significantly.  St. Joseph's LI was able to break through for a go-ahead score in the 66th minute, however, as Nick Pensavalle beat Augusto Lebron (Valley Stream, NY) to the right.  Maritime had a chance to tie it just before the final horn after the Golden Eagles' James Dacos was issued a yellow card with two seconds remaining.  The free kick was blocked by the wall, though, and St. Joseph's LI came away with the 2-1 victory.

Lebron (3-2-2) was credited with four saves in a losing effort.  Vitale (3-4-0), meanwhile, made seven saves for the Golden Eagles.

This marked the start of a span where Maritime plays three out of four at home.  The Privateers are back at Reinhart Field on Wednesday night, when they take on Manhattanville (1-3-3, 1-0-1 Skyline) at 7 p.m.
