Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Privateers Hold Off Five Towns, 2-1

THROGGS NECK, NY – Leading by a goal, the Maritime College men's soccer team faced a furious flurry of shots in the final 30 seconds against Five Towns on Friday night.  Two attempts were blocked and one was stopped by the Maritime defense before crossing the goal line before Augusto Lebron (Valley Stream, NY) covered up the Sound's final shot with just seconds attempt to seal a 2-1 victory for the Privateers (3-1-1) over Five Towns (1-2-0) at Reinhart Field.

Maritime outshot Five Towns 8-2 in the first half, and the Privateers finally broke through in the 26th minute.  Jack Burkhardt (Cutchogue, NY) took a cross from Jack Young (Floral Park, NY) and put it into the lower left corner to give Maritime a 1-0 lead.

Nicolas Silva (Middle Village, NY) doubled the Privateers' advantage in the 80th minute.  After Burkhardt had a shot blocked, Chris Vazquez (Woodhaven, NY) rocketed a shot from the left side of the box that bounced off the goalkeeper's hands and went right to a waiting Silva at the near post.  He tapped it into the open net for his first collegiate goal.

Five Towns immediately countered, however.  A minute after Silva's tally, Angel Chavez raced down the left side and beat Lebron one-on-one to pull the Sound within 2-1.  Five Towns continued to apply pressure, and earned a late free kick from 30 yards out.  The Sound brought everyone forward, but the Maritime defense held and the Privateers held on for the win.

Lebron (3-1-1) made four saves in the victory, while the Privateers were also credited with a team save on the potential game-tying goal.  Steven Paguada (1-2-0) faced 16 Maritime shots and recorded eight saves.

This was Maritime's final non-conference game of the season.  The Privateers (0-0-0 Skyline) begin their Skyline Conference schedule on Tuesday night, when they visit Mount St. Mary (0-4-1, 0-0-1 Skyline) at 7 p.m.
