Maritime Drops Five-Set Thriller Against CCNY

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team and CCNY squared off for five sets and nearly two-and-a-half hours on Thursday night.  In the end, however, it was the Beavers (3-3) who came out on top, defeating the Privateers (3-2) by a score of 25-21, 23-25, 23-25, 27-25, 15-13 at Riesenberg Gymnasium.  CCNY won 113 total points in the match to Maritime's 109.

With the Privateers leading two sets to one, the Beavers rattled off the first five points of the fourth set.  CCNY extended that cushion to 21-15 and reached set point at 24-19.  Jessica Mele (Southold, NY) followed with a kill to start a 5-0 Maritime run that leveled the score at 24-24.  The Privateers fought off another set point at 25-24 before CCNY finally closed out the frame on its sixth opportunity, 27-25.

Mele and Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) combined for three straight kills to open the final set, as Maritime jumped out to a 6-0 advantage.  The Beavers responded with a 5-0 run of their own, though, to make it 6-5.  CCNY eventually pulled in front, 11-9, before three straight Maritime points gave the lead back to the Privateers, 12-11.  CCNY scored the next three points, though, to reach match point, and the Beavers clinched the 3-2 victory with a 15-13, fifth-set win.  It marked the second straight year in which CCNY defeated Maritime in five sets at Riesenberg Gymnasium.

Pavarini had a triple-double for Maritime, finishing with 10 kills, 20 assists and 18 digs.  She also tallied five service aces.  Mele just missed a triple-double of her own with 15 kills, 19 digs and eight aces.  Erica Pagano (Lawrence, NY) posted a double-double with 13 assists and 14 digs to go along with seven kills.  Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) recorded 19 digs and four aces, while Diana Rodriguez (Queens, NY) contributed 13 digs.  As a team, the Privateers outdug the Beavers 90-86.

In the first set, CCNY used a 10-2 spurt to turn a 5-5 tie into a 15-7 advantage.  The Beavers still led 19-11 when Maritime went on a 6-0 run that was capped by four consecutive Mele aces to pull within two, 19-17.  CCNY scored four of the next six points, though, to push the margin back to four, 23-19, and the Beavers captured the opening set by a 25-21 count.

After CCNY won the first two points of the second set, the Privateers rattled off 10 in a row to take a 10-2 lead.  The Beavers came all the way back, however, opening up a 20-17 lead before a Pagano kill and two straight Mele aces evened the score at 20-20.  CCNY went back in front, 23-21, but Maritime ended the set on a 4-0 run to earn a 25-23 win and even the match at one set apiece.

There were eight ties and six lead changes in a back-and-forth third set.  Maritime jumped in front, 7-2, before CCNY scored eight straight points to go up 10-7.  The Beavers eventually opened up a 16-11 margin, but the Privateers stormed back to regain the lead, 20-19.  With the score knotted at 22-22, Mele ripped a kill, then served an ace to bring Maritime to set point.  The Privateers took the stanza by a 25-23 count to go ahead 2-1 in the match.

Bianka Catral notched 13 kills and a match-high 25 digs for CCNY.  Arianna Rivas registered 12 kills and four blocks.  Viviana Alatorre, meanwhile, had 36 assists to go along with 13 digs and four aces.  Rosalynda Russo finsihed with 25 assists and four aces, and Fatimah Coppin smacked eight kills while adding 13 digs for the Beavers.

On Saturday, the Privateers travel to Vassar for their only tri-match of the season.  Maritime takes on William Paterson (6-1) at 1 p.m., then faces the host Brewers (4-4) at 3 p.m.
