POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team wrapped up a busy slate of seven matches in 11 days on Saturday with its first tri-match of the season. The Privateers (3-4) fell to William Paterson (8-1) by a 25-7, 25-11, 25-14 count before dropping a 25-12, 25-9, 25-8 decision to Vassar (5-5) at Kenyon Hall.
After William Paterson easily won the first set, 25-7, in Maritime's opening match, the Privateers scored the first three points of the second frame. The Pioneers responded with a 10-2 run, though, to open up a 10-5 advantage. A
Jessica Mele (Southold, NY) kill made it 13-8 before William Paterson ended the set on a 12-3 rally to wrap up a 25-11 win and go ahead 2-0 in the match.
There were 10 ties early in the third set, as neither side was able to build a lead of more than two points. However, with the score knotted at 11-11, William Paterson rattled off 14 of the next 17 points. The Pioneers took the set by a 25-14 count to close out the 3-0 win.
Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) had four assists and five digs for the Privateers, while Mele tallied a team-high seven digs.
Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) added six digs, and
Erica Pagano (Lawrence, NY) distributed three assists.
For William Paterson, Abigail Hayth smashed six kills on .556 hitting. Erica Bickart also recorded six kills, and Beatriz Soares paced the Pioneers with five digs. Alexa Jarvis, meanwhile, finished with 12 assists, five digs and four service aces. As a team, William Paterson hit .282 (30 kills, 10 errors, 71 attempts) and served 19 aces.
In the Privateers' second match of the day, Vassar jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first set. After the Brewers extended their advantage to 18-6, Maritime rattled off six of the next nine points to trim its deficit to 21-12. However, Vassar claimed the next four points to finish off a 25-12 set win.
Maritime scored the first two points of the second set, but the Brewers took the next six and 11 of the next 12. Vassar won the second set, 25-9, then wrapped up the victory by earning a 25-8 triumph in the third set.
Mele led the Privateers with five kills, and she added six digs. Cordero had two aces to go along with a match-high 11 digs, and Pavarini handed out four assists. Pagano, meanwhile, finished with three assists and four digs against Vassar.
Maura McAusland recorded a match-high 11 kills on .471 hitting to pace the Brewers. Hailey Hayes added nine kills, eight digs and three aces, while Morgan Miller finished with eight kills and six digs. Ellie Hogan notched nine digs for Vassar, which held a 37-26 edge in that category. The Brewers hit .453 (41-7-75) as a team in the match.
On Wednesday, Maritime (1-0 Skyline) resumes its Skyline Conference schedule by visiting St. Joseph's LI (3-3, 0-0 Skyline) at 7 p.m.
