THROGGS NECK, NY – Charles Longo (Bellport, NY) broke the Maritime College men's lacrosse single-game program record for points on Saturday afternoon. He finished with 12 points on seven goals and five assists, as the Privateers (7-5, 2-0 Skyline) earned their sixth consecutive victory, 17-9 over Manhattanville (4-6, 0-1 Skyline) at Reinhart Field.
Longo, who had two goals and eight points on the season entering the game, scored with 17 seconds left for his 12
th point of the contest, moving him ahead of Nick Schneider as Maritime's all-time single-game record-holder. Schneider had 11 points against Becker on March 9, 2013. Longo's seven goals, meanwhile, were one off the program record held by Schneider (in that game) and three others.
Maritime got off to a quick start, finding the back of the net four times in the opening five minutes. After Sean Larkin put the Valiants on the board, Longo posted back-to-back tallies to spark a 4-0 rally that gave the Privateers an 8-1 lead. Maritime led 9-3 at halftime, with Longo either scoring or assisting on seven of those goals.
Manhattanville notched the first tally of the third quarter before the Privateers responded with four straight to increase their advantage to 13-4. After Longo tied Schneider's record with his sixth goal and 11
th point of the day, the Valiants rattled off four goals in a row to pull within 16-9.
Joseph Bruno (East Islip, NY) won a faceoff with 22 seconds left and quickly rushed into the offensive zone, where he set up Longo's record-breaker. The 17-9 win extended Maritime's winning streak against Skyline foes to 27 straight.
The Privateers outshot the Valiants 55-21 and held a 56-27 edge in ground balls. Bruno and
Thomas Pellicci (Manorville, NY), meanwhile, combined to go 22-for-30 on faceoffs, with Bruno collecting seven ground balls.
Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY) finished with five points on three goals and two assists, while
Brian Drost (Shoreham, NY) had a hat trick of his own. In addition to scoring his first goal of the season (and the second of his career),
Kieran Hendry (East Northport, NY) caused five turnovers and gathered six ground balls.
Matthew Weigand (Massapequa, NY) recorded eight ground balls and three caused turnovers, and
Matthew Guercio (Smithtown, NY) contributed six ground balls.
All three of Maritime's goalkeepers saw action for the second straight day.
Ben McGrady (Annapolis, MD) (7-4) got the start and earned the win.
Jack Daresta (Massapequa, NY) made two saves in the third quarter, while
Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) finished up in net and was credited with one save.
For the Valiants, Jesse McGrath led the way with four goals. Nick Cornelia and Sean Larkin each scored twice, while James Weinbaum registered three assists. Jared Wilmoth picked up a team-best four ground balls for Manhattanville. In addition to collecting four ground balls, Joe Ulzheimer (2-1) stopped 19 Maritime shots in a losing effort.
After playing twice in little more than 24 hours, the Privateers have just two days off before returning to action. Maritime visits St. Joseph's LI (1-2, 1-0 Skyline) at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
