THROGGS NECK, NY – Maritime College women's lacrosse history was made on Friday night. The Privateers (8-2, 3-0 Skyline) earned a 9-7 victory against Farmingdale (3-7, 1-2 Skyline) at Reinhart Field. It was their first-ever win over the Rams in 17 all-time meetings.
After Farmingdale jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the game,
Nicole Johnson (Farmingville, NY) converted a free position shot to put Maritime on the board. A
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) goal then brought the Privateers within 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Morgan Tracy (Cambridge, MD) scored twice early in the second quarter to cap a 4-0 run that gave Maritime the lead before Farmingdale's Megan Diamond tied it at the 5:44 mark. Tracy found the back of the net again just 32 seconds later, though, putting the Privateers in front 5-4 at halftime.
Sarah Malone (Land O'Lakes, FL) started the scoring in the third quarter to give Maritime its first two-goal edge of the night, and the Privateers took control from there. Maritime forced 27 Farmingdale turnovers and won the ground ball battle 29-23. The Privateers also nearly doubled the Rams' shot total, 34-18, and drew 10 free position opportunities, four of which they converted.
However, Farmingdale goalkeeper Ronnie Reilly made 16 saves to keep it close, and the Rams pulled within one, 8-7, on Nicole Pontecorvo's tally with 5:04 remaining. After Maritime won the ensuing draw, Head Coach
Kerri Handras used her final timeout. The timeout worked, as
Jenna Lesiewicz (Wading River, NY) scored with 3:40 left to once again put the Privateers up two, 9-7.
Liz Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) then sealed the victory with a save at the 1:07 mark, as Maritime avenged its loss to the Rams in last season's Skyline semifinals.
Tracy finished with three goals (all in the second quarter), while Lesiewicz had two goals and an assist to go along with six draw controls, four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Malone added two goals of her own, and Johnson recorded a goal, two assists, five caused turnovers and four ground balls. In addition to scoring a goal, Ford picked up six ground balls.
Anya Josberger (Coxsackie, NY), meanwhile, was credited with a game-high seven ground balls. Pomaro (8-2) stopped five Farmingdale shots.
Diamond had a hand in six of Farmingdale's seven goals. She scored four times and assisted on two others. Diamond also led the Rams with six draw controls and tied for the team-high with four ground balls. Reilly (3-7) grabbed four ground balls, as well.
On Wednesday night, the Privateers return to action with a 6 p.m. matchup at Purchase (2-5, 0-2 Skyline).
