MIDDLETOWN, RI – The Maritime College men's lacrosse team concluded its non-conference schedule with a visit to Salve Regina on Friday afternoon. In the make-up of a game that was originally postponed on Feb. 25, the Privateers (6-5) earned their fifth straight win, 11-8, over the Seahawks (6-5) at Gaudet Field.
After
Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY) gave the Privateers a 1-0 lead, Salve Regina rattled off three straight goals.
Brian Drost (Shoreham, NY) found the back of the net to make it a 3-2 game after the first quarter, but the Seahawks regained a two-goal advantage on Maxwell Van Winkle's goal less than a minute into the second period. Tomich started a five-score Maritime rally, though, that put the Privateers up 7-4 before Liam Cooney's man-up tally brought Salve Regina within 7-5 at halftime.
Third-quarter goals by
Ryan Brice (Wall, NJ) and Tomich extended Maritime's cushion to 9-5, and
Christian Vera's (Baldwin, NY) man-up score early in the fourth pushed the margin to 10-6. The final was 11-8, as the Privateers held their opponent under 10 goals for the third consecutive game and the fourth time during their five-game winning streak.
Tomich
scored five times and added an assist. He also picked up three ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers. Brice
had three goals and an assist, while
Charles Longo (Bellport, NY) was credited with a goal and an assist.
Thomas Kennedy (Orangeburg, NY) handed out three assists, while
Parker Reilly (West Islip, NY) finished with two assists.
Ben McGrady (Annapolis, MD) (6-4) played the first half in goal and earned the win. He made three saves.
Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) tallied five saves in the third quarter before
Jack Daresta (Massapequa, NY) finished up with a four-save final period.
For the Seahawks, Van Winkle led the way with two goals and an assist. Justin Haverly went 13-for-20 on faceoffs and collected a game-high 12 ground balls, as Salve Regina held a 40-34 advantage in that category. Goalkeeper William Kein (6-5) faced 41 Maritime shots and recorded 17 saves.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Privateers (1-0 Skyline), who return to action for the second time in barely 24 hours on Saturday, when they welcome Manhattanville (4-5, 0-0 Skyline) to Reinhart Field for a 1 p.m. matchup.
