THROGGS NECK, NY – On Wednesday evening, the Maritime College women's lacrosse team began its home schedule with a matchup against Southern Virginia. The Privateers (2-0) led 12-8 midway through the fourth quarter before holding off a Knights comeback, beating Southern Virginia (1-1) by a 12-11 score at Reinhart Field.
Maritime entered the final period with a 9-5 advantage, but the Knights scored three of the next four goals to pull within 10-8.
Morgan Tracy (Cambridge, MD) and
Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) found the back of the net 42 seconds apart, however, to bring the margin back to four, 12-8, with 8:09 remaining.
After a free position goal by Kiah Baisden at the 2:53 mark, Maritime controlled the ensuing draw and ran the 90-second shot clock all the way down before
Jenna Lesiewicz's (Wading River, NY) shot was saved.
Avery Jillson Neuwirth (Croton-On-Hudson, NY) caused a turnover on the other end, though, and
Emily Commodore (Tinton Falls, NJ) picked up the ground ball for the Privateers. Maritime used its final timeout, then maintained possession throughout the last minute to secure the one-goal victory.
Tracy took four shots in the game, and all of them ended up in the back of the net. She also had an assist to go along with three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Nicolosi finished with three goals and an assist, while
Nicole Johnson (Farmingville, NY) posted two goals, three assists and three ground balls. Jillson Neuwirth scored two goals of her own and added three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Lesiewicz led the Privateers with six draw controls, and
Tori Gay (Whiteford, MD) controlled five draws.
Liz Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) (2-0) made 10 saves in a winning effort.
For the Knights, Alissa Johnson notched four goals, an assist and four draw controls. Piper Searle also registered four goals, while Mariela Perez had four ground balls and three caused turnovers. In addition to picking up four ground balls, Josie Skopec posted five draw controls. Morgan Bunch (1-1) took the loss for Southern Virginia after notching nine saves.
Each team scored an early goal before Tracy netted a pair to put Maritime in front 3-1 midway through the first quarter. The Privateers held a 4-2 advantage at the end of the period and maintained that two-goal edge, 6-4, at halftime. Maritime then outscored Southern Virginia 3-1 in the third quarter to extend their cushion to 9-5.
The Privateers play the second of three straight home games on Saturday, when Morrisville (0-2) visits Reinhart Field at 11 a.m.
