THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-0 lead on Saturday afternoon before seeing Morrisville answer with six straight goals to go ahead 6-5 at the end of the first quarter. The Privateers (3-0) held the Mustangs (0-4) to just four tallies the rest of the way, though, en route to a 21-10 victory at Reinhart Field.
It took only eight seconds for
Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) to find the back of the net, and her fourth goal of the first quarter put Maritime in front 5-0 at the 5:55 mark. Cara Walker scored 40 seconds later to spark a five-goal rally for Morrisville that tied the game. The Mustangs then went in front on Sarah Lutz's free position score to end the opening period.
After the sides traded goals early in the second quarter, Nicolosi's fifth of the contest once again evened the score at 7-7. She then assisted on
Sarah Malone's (Land O'Lakes, FL) tally that gave Maritime an 8-7 halftime advantage. In the third quarter, the Privateers outscored the Mustangs 7-2 to extend that margin to 15-9. Maritime added six fourth-quarter goals in the 21-10 win.
Jenna Lesiewicz (Wading River, NY) finished with nine points on five goals and four assists. She also recorded nine draw controls, six ground balls and five caused turnovers. Nicolosi had an assist to go along with her team-high six goals, while
Tori Gay (Whiteford, MD) registered three goals, eight draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Avery Jillson Neuwirth (Croton-On-Hudson, NY) and Malone added two goals and two assists apiece. In addition to making five saves,
Liz Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) (3-0) picked up four ground balls.
Three different Mustangs scored twice, and Walker led Morrisville with eight draw controls. Pippy Pritchard and Keeley Riley each picked up a team-best three ground balls. Goalkeeper Rebecca Thomas (0-4), meanwhile, was credited with 12 saves.
On Tuesday, Maritime wraps up its three-game homestand by welcoming Albertus Magnus (0-2) to Reinhart Field at 4 p.m.
