Privateers Suffer First Loss of Season

CENTER VALLEY, PA – On Friday afternoon, the Maritime College women's lacrosse team (3-1) dropped a 15-14 decision to DeSales (3-4) at the Turf Fields.  It was the Privateers' first loss of the season, and the first time Maritime fell to a non-conference opponent since an 18-6 defeat against Union on Feb. 27, 2020.

The teams traded goals early on before DeSales took the first two-score advantage at 5-3 early in the second quarter.  Nicole Johnson (Farmingville, NY) responded with two goals 35 seconds apart to tie the game at 5-5.  After the Bulldogs went back in front, 7-6, the Privateers ended the half on a 3-0 run to open up a 9-7 cushion at the break.

DeSales outscored Maritime 5-2 in the third quarter, though, to regain the lead, 12-11.  Morgan Tracy (Cambridge, MD) tied it early in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs rattled off the next three to go ahead 15-12.  Avery Jillson Neuwirth (Croton-On-Hudson, NY) got the Privateers within two, 15-13, with 1:56 left, then Sarah Malone (Land O'Lakes, FL) scored 32 seconds later to make it a one-goal game.  However, DeSales controlled the ensuing draw and maintained possession for the remainder of the contest, sealing the 15-14 victory.

Johnson paced the Privateers with five goals, and she also recorded six draw controls.  Jillson Neuwirth had five points on two goals and three assists, while Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) added two goals of her own.  In addition to scoring twice, Tracy tallied three ground balls and three draw controls.  Liz Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) (3-1) made six saves.

For the Bulldogs, Hayley Petrosini finished with three goals, an assist and six draw controls.  Dani Towey and Amanda Schultz also had hat tricks, while Schultz added three ground balls.  Marina Bradley, meanwhile, collected seven points on two goals and five assists.  Goalkeeper Michaela Regan (3-4) was credited with nine saves in the winning effort.

Maritime returns to action on Monday, when Albertus Magnus (0-3) visits Reinhart Field at 4 p.m.  The game was originally scheduled for last Tuesday, but was postponed due to inclement weather.
