No. 10 Wesleyan Topples Maritime

MIDDLETOWN, CT – The Maritime College men's lacrosse team concluded a stretch of three straight games against opponents that posted a 2022 NCAA Tournament win on Wednesday night with a visit to 10th-ranked Wesleyan.  The Privateers (1-4) scored the first two goals of the contest, but were unable to maintain that momentum, as the Cardinals (2-0) notched an 18-2 victory at Citrin Field.

Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY) and Parker Reilly (West Islip, NY) put Maritime up 2-0 not even five minutes into the game, but Wesleyan's Matt Gill scored just 14 seconds after Reilly's goal to make it 2-1.  His second goal of the quarter gave the Cardinals their first lead of the night, 3-2, and Wesleyan added three second-quarter tallies to extend its advantage to 6-2 at the break.  The Cardinals then outscored the Privateers 12-0 in the second half to earn the 18-2 win.

Reilly has scored in all five of Maritime's games this season and leads the Privateers with 13 goals on the year.  Kieran Hendry (East Northport, NY) recorded team-highs with six ground balls and four caused turnovers on Wednesday, while Patrick McGrath (Franklin Square, NY) finished with four ground balls.  Matthew Weigand (Massapequa, NY) picked up three ground balls to go along with three caused turnovers, and Grant Gifford (Oakdale, NY) also forced three turnovers.  Ben McGrady (Annapolis, MD) (1-3) got the start in goal and made 16 saves before being replaced by Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY), who stopped one shot and allowed two goals.

For the Cardinals, Gill led the way with four goals.  He also distributed three assists.  Justin Hazard had two goals and two assists, while Jack Raba finished with a goal, three assists and three ground balls.  Nolan Collins collected a game-best five ground balls to go along with five caused turnovers.  Colin Hanley (2-0) earned the win in goal after making six saves over the first 50 minutes.  Drew Skibnieweski was credited with one save over the final 10 minutes.

Maritime returns to action on Sunday, when Geneseo (2-2) visits Reinhart Field at 12 p.m.  It will mark the start of a six-game homestand for the Privateers.
