THROGGS NECK, NY – On Sunday afternoon, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team took on Geneseo at Reinhart Field. After the Knights scored the first three goals of the game, the Privateers responded with the next two. Maritime (1-5) would get no closer, though, as Geneseo (3-2) recorded a 13-8 victory.
Geneseo got early goals from Spencer Frank, William McCummiskey and Casey Fortunato before
Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY) and
Sean Foley (Long Beach, NY) brought Maritime within 3-2 midway through the first quarter. It was 4-3 at the end of the period, then the Knights outscored the Privateers 3-1 in the second quarter to extend their lead to 7-4 at the break.
Robert Boniello's tally early in the third quarter made it 8-4 in favor of the Knights, but
Derek Walter (Ronkonkoma, NY) and Tomich followed with back-to-back scores that brought Maritime back within 8-6 at the 11:34 mark. Geneseo posted the next two goals, though, to take a 10-6 advantage into the final period. After Walter found the back of the net with 12:36 remaining, the Knights rattled off three straight goals before
Parker Reilly (West Islip, NY) finished off the scoring in Maritime's 13-8 defeat.
Reilly
had two goals and an assist for the Privateers. Tomich
and Walter added a pair of goals each, while
Charles Gerace (Miller Place, NY) recorded a goal and an assist.
Matthew Weigand (Massapequa, NY) picked up 11 ground balls, and
Kieran Hendry (East Northport, NY) tallied eight ground balls to go along with four caused turnovers.
Ben McGrady (Annapolis, MD) (1-4) was credited with a career-high 18 saves before giving way to
Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY), who stopped both shots he faced.
For the Knights, Knight finished with three goals and an assist. McCummiskey also posted a hat trick, while Jimmy Atkinson contributed four points on two goals and two assists. BB Syrop went 17-for-25 on faceoffs and led Geneseo with eight ground balls. The Knights held a 46-29 advantage in that category and outshot the Privateers 48-39. Starting goalkeeper Mark Pav (1-2) tallied 11 saves, and Wes Ralph turned away a pair of Maritime shots.
This marked the start of a six-game homestand for the Privateers. Maritime welcomes Coast Guard (3-0) to Reinhart Field at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
