THROGGS NECK, NY – In its most complete effort of the season, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team (2-5) snapped its four-game losing streak with a 10-7 victory over No. 20 Coast Guard (3-1) at Reinhart Field on Wednesday. It was Maritime's first-ever win against a ranked opponent.
The Privateers struck first on a man-up tally by
Sean Foley (Long Beach, NY) at the 6:37 mark of the opening quarter, then made it 2-0 on a goal by
Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY). Coast Guard scored late in the first quarter before tying the game 1:30 into the second quarter. Maritime immediately responded, though, as
Patrick Schnell (Jericho, NY) found the back of the net barely a minute later.
It was a 4-4 game at halftime, and Coast Guard took its first lead of the game on Ian Kelly's man-up score early in the third quarter. The Privateers would hold the Bears scoreless for the rest of the quarter, though, using goals from
Thomas Kennedy (Orangeburg, NY) and Foley to go back in front.
After
Charles Gerace (Miller Place, NY) made it 7-5 in favor of Maritime, Ryan Hunter found the back of the net with a man advantage to again pull Coast Guard within one, 7-6. Foley made it 8-6 with an unassisted goal at the 8:18 mark before giving the Privateers an insurance tally with 2:20 to go. Kennedy's second of the night increased Maritime's cushion to 10-6 before the Bears' Caleb Holdridge scored 10 seconds later. The Privateers won the ensuing faceoff, however, and held on for the 10-7 win.
Foley had an assist to go along with his four goals. Tomich finished with two goals and two assists, while Kennedy's two tallies were the first and second of his collegiate career.
Joseph Bruno (East Islip, NY) went 13-for-20 on faceoffs and tied for the team lead with five ground balls.
Matthew Weigand (Massapequa, NY) also picked up five ground balls, and
Matthew Guercio (Smithtown, NY) collected five ground balls while adding three caused turnovers. Goalkeeper
Ben McGrady (Annapolis, MD) (2-4) made nine saves.
Holdridge paced the Bears with two goals and two assists. Taylor Gustafson also scored twice, and he had an assist, as well. Oliver Bolton gathered seven ground balls to go along with five caused turnovers. Dan Lucas (3-1) was credited with 15 saves.
Maritime will now have a week off before returning to action. The Privateers continue their six-game homestand by welcoming Kean (5-0) to Reinhart Field next Wednesday, March 22 at 7 p.m.
