Privateers Get Past Kean On Reilly's Game-Winner

THROGGS NECK, NY – After leading 7-3 at halftime, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team saw Kean tie the game at 10-10 midway through the fourth quarter on Wednesday night.  However, Parker Reilly (West Islip, NY) scored with 5:10 left to give the Privateers (3-5) an 11-10 victory over the Cougars (7-1) at Reinhart Field.

Kean opened the scoring, but Maritime responded with three straight goals to go up 3-1.  After the Cougars' Nick Thorne cut the Privateers' lead to 3-2, Joseph Bruno (East Islip, NY) won the ensuing faceoff, raced down and put it in the back of the net five seconds later to make it 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.  Kean got on the board again 11 seconds into the second quarter before Maritime went on another 3-0 run to increase its advantage to 7-3 at halftime.

The Cougars outscored Maritime 4-2 in the third quarter to pull within 9-7, then Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY) made it a three-goal game again early in the final period.  However, Kean rattled off each of the next three goals to tie it at 10-10 with 7:13 remaining.  After Reilly's tally put the Privateers back in front, the Cougars had the ball and one final chance to send the game into overtime with nine seconds to go.  Connor Batjer's shot went high, though, and Maritime held on for the 11-10 win.

Reilly finished with a game-high four goals, and he added three caused turnovers.  Charles Gerace (Miller Place, NY) found the back of the net twice, while Bruno also scored two goals to go along with a team-best six ground balls.  Patrick McGrath (Franklin Square, NY) picked up five ground balls, and Matthew Weigand (Massapequa, NY) posted a goal, four ground balls and three caused turnovers.  Ben McGrady (Annapolis, MD) (3-4) made 17 saves in the win.

For the Cougars, Dylan Johnson had three points on two goals and an assist.  Nick Thorne also scored twice while gathering four ground balls.  Max Stevens collected seven ground balls and Steven Thorne secured six ground balls, as Kean held a 40-30 advantage in that category.  Devin Reppert (6-1) was credited with 11 saves.

Maritime continues its six-game homestand on Saturday, when Montclair State (4-4) visits Reinhart Field for a 1 p.m. matchup.  It will be the Privateers' final contest before the start of Skyline Conference play.
