Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Back-and-Forth Contest Goes to Stockton

THROGGS NECK, NY – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team welcomed Stockton to Reinhart Field.  Trailing by one with 29 seconds left, the Privateers had a ball and a chance to send the game into overtime.  However, Maritime (1-3) was unable to get a shot off, and the Ospreys (3-1) came away with a 13-12 win.

Stockton scored two early goals before Maritime got tallies from Parker Reilly (West Islip, NY) and Sean Foley (Long Beach, NY) to tie it.  After the Ospreys added another, the Privateers rallied for three straight to go up 5-3.  A man-up goal by Reilly put Maritime in front 6-4 midway through the second quarter, but Stockton responded with a pair of scores to make it a 6-6 game at halftime.

Maritime regained a two-goal advantage, 9-7, with 6:02 remaining in the third quarter before the Ospreys rattled off five consecutive tallies to take a 12-9 lead.  Stockton held a 13-10 cushion when Matthew Weigand (Massapequa, NY) raced down and scored with three minutes remaining.  Reilly then got the Privateers within one, 13-12, with 30 seconds to go.  Maritime won the ensuing faceoff and called timeout to set up a final shot.  The Privateers ran out of time, though, and Stockton held on for the one-goal victory.

Reilly found the back of the net five times and added three ground balls.  Foley finished with three goals and an assist, while also picking up three ground balls and causing three turnovers.  Derek Walter (Ronkonkoma, NY) scored twice and Brian Drost (Shoreham, NY) distributed two assists.  In addition to notching his first goal as a Privateer, Matthew Weigand (Massapequa, NY) collected a team-best five ground balls.  Goalkeeper Ben McGrady (Annapolis, MD) (1-2) was credited with 16 saves in the loss.

Luc Swedlund, an Honorable Mention All-American last season, had seven goals and an assist for the Ospreys.  Dante Poli recorded two goals and an assist, while Sean Haddock handed out three assists to go along with a goal.  Tyler Horvath led Stockton with six ground balls.  Colin Bernstein (1-0) made 20 saves in net.

The Privateers wrap up a string of three straight games against 2022 NCAA Tournament teams on Wednesday night, when they visit Wesleyan (0-0) at 7 p.m.  It will be Maritime's only road contest in a nine-game stretch.
