NEW LONDON, CT – The Maritime College women's lacrosse team hit the road for a matchup with Coast Guard on Wednesday afternoon. The Privateers (5-2) outscored the Bears, 5-4, in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome an early deficit, as Coast Guard (6-3) earned a 17-9 win at Cadet Memorial Field.
After Coast Guard jumped out to a 5-0 lead,
Nicole Johnson (Farmingville, NY) got the Privateers on the board with 5:11 remaining in the first quarter. The Bears scored the next four goals, though, to increase their advantage to 9-1.
Jenna Lesiewicz (Wading River, NY) and
Avery Jillson Neuwirth (Croton-On-Hudson, NY) found the back of the net less than a minute apart before Coast Guard added three more tallies to make it 12-3 at halftime.
With the Bears holding a 14-5 advantage midway through the third quarter, Lesiewicz scored back-to-back goals before assisting on a score by
Morgan Tracy (Cambridge, MD) that brought the Privateers within 14-8. However, Coast Guard's Aislinn Murray found the back of the net 35 seconds later to start a 3-1 rally that closed out a 17-9 victory for the Bears.
Lesiewicz was the only Privateer with multiple goals in the contest. She finished with four tallies to go along with an assist, four draw controls and three ground balls.
Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) had a goal and an assist, while Johnson
controlled four draws.
Kathryn Sandford (Floral Park, NY) paced Maritime with four ground balls, and
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) notched a team-best three caused turnovers.
Liz Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) (5-2) made seven saves in the loss.
For the Bears, Gianna Cascio tallied seven points on five goals and two assists. Caitlyn Coates contributed four goals and four draw controls, while Murray finished with three goals and two assists. Abby McAllister had three goals and an assist. Lauren Henry posted a game-high six draw controls, and Mia Becker controlled five draws while also picking up three ground balls. Devon McCue (5-3) played the first half in goal and recorded six saves. Maici Mintchwarner was credited with five second-half saves.
This was Maritime's final non-conference game of the season. The Privateers (0-0 Skyline) begin their Skyline Conference slate by welcoming Mount St. Mary (3-5, 0-0 Skyline) to Reinhart Field at 7 p.m. on Friday.
