THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College women's lacrosse team got off to a fast start and never looked back in its Skyline Conference opener on Friday night. The Privateers (6-2, 1-0 Skyline) led 11-1 after one quarter en route to a 20-3 victory over Mount St. Mary (3-6, 0-1 Skyline) at Reinhart Field.
After
Avery Jillson Neuwirth (Croton-On-Hudson, NY) opened the scoring just 34 seconds into the contest, Karli Ferrucci tied it for the Knights less than a minute later. However,
Morgan Tracy (Cambridge, MD) found the back of the net a mere 22 seconds after the Mount St. Mary goal to spark a 10-0 run for the Privateers. Maritime then scored four times in the second quarter to extend its cushion to 15-1 at halftime.
Mary Cirelli (Oreland, PA) made it 15 unanswered goals for the Privateers early in the third quarter before Victoria Ward finally snapped Maritime's rally. Cirelli's second tally of the quarter made it 17-2, and the Privateers notched three fourth-quarter scores to close out a 20-3 triumph, as Maritime started conference play with a win for the third straight year.
Three different Privateers had four goals in the victory.
Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) finished with four goals and four assists, while
Jenna Lesiewicz (Wading River, NY) tallied four goals and an assist to go along with six draw controls and four ground balls.
Nicole Johnson (Farmingville, NY) also scored four times, and she added a game-high nine draw controls.
Kathryn Sandford (Floral Park, NY) picked up four ground balls of her own.
Sarah Malone (Land O'Lakes, FL), meanwhile, handed out three assists and forced a pair of turnovers.
Liz Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) (6-2) was credited with five saves in the win.
Kate Crooker registered a goal and an assist for the Knights. Ward had a goal and three draw controls, and Ferrucci finished with four ground balls and two caused turnovers to go along with her goal. Along with collecting four ground balls, goalkeeper Liz Petrellese (3-6) made seven saves.
On Tuesday night, the Privateers hit the road for the first time in conference play. Maritime visits Manhattanville (7-0, 1-0 Skyline) for a 7 p.m. contest.
