MAHWAH, NJ – The Maritime College women's lacrosse team trailed at halftime for the first time this season on Wednesday afternoon. The Privateers (5-1) responded by shutting out Ramapo (1-5) in the second half to turn an 8-6 deficit into a 16-8 victory at the Ramapo Athletic Center Turf.
Ramapo scored the first two goals of the game and led 6-3 at the end of the first quarter. The Roadrunners took an 8-5 advantage on a tally by Erin Smeilus with 2:24 remaining in the second quarter before
Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) found the back of the net just before halftime to bring Maritime within 8-6.
After goals by
Jenna Lesiewicz (Wading River, NY) and
Avery Jillson Neuwirth (Croton-On-Hudson, NY) early in the third quarter, the Privateers went ahead for the first time when Lesiewicz scored again at the 12:11 mark. Maritime added four more goals in the quarter to open up a 13-8 cushion. The Privateers then outscored the Roadrunners 3-0 in the fourth quarter to close out a 16-8 victory.
Nicole Johnson (Farmingvillle, NY) led the Privateers with four goals, and she also tallied five draw controls. Nicolosi finished with a game-high six points (three goals, three assists), while Jillson Neuwirth had a hat trick of her own. Lesiewicz, meanwhile, recorded three goals and an assist to go along with six caused turnovers, four draw controls and four ground balls.
Morgan Tracy (Cambridge, MD) scored twice and controlled four draws.
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) caused four turnovers, as Maritime posted 22 caused turnovers as a team. Goalkeeper
Liz Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) (5-1) was credited with six saves in the victory.
Bethany Glaser and Lauren Travaglini each had two goals and an assist for the Roadrunners. Glaser added three caused turnovers. Kelly Griffin notched a game-high six draw controls, while Julianna McClain and Alyssa Curto picked up three ground balls apiece. Curto (1-5) also made 13 saves in goal.
Maritime now has a week off before returning to action. The Privateers conclude their non-conference schedule with a 4 p.m. visit to Coast Guard (4-3) next Wednesday.
