THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's lacrosse team opened its home schedule on Wednesday night with a rematch of its 2022 NCAA Tournament encounter with Stevens. It was a 5-3 game after one quarter, but the visiting Ducks (4-1) eventually pulled away for a 22-12 victory over the Privateers (1-2) at Reinhart Field.
Stevens got on the board just 1:03 into the contest, but
Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY) tied the score at the 9:31 mark of the first quarter. After the Ducks went back in front, Tomich answered 22 seconds later. Stevens went back in front on a man-up tally by Jack Savarese before extending its advantage to 5-3 at the end of the quarter. The Ducks then outscored the Privateers 4-1 in the second quarter to extend their lead to 9-4 at the break.
After Stevens pushed the margin to six at 11-5,
Parker Reilly (West Islip, NY) and
Christian Vera (Baldwin, NY) followed with back-to-back tallies to bring Maritime back within four. The Privateers would get no closer, however, as the Ducks increased their cushion to 14-8 after three quarters en route to a 22-12 win.
Tomich, coming off a nine-point performance in the win over New Paltz, had seven on Wednesday, finishing with five goals and two assists.
Patrick Schnell (Jericho, NY) and
Brian Drost (Shoreham, NY) each recorded two goals and an assist.
Charles Longo (Bellport, NY), meanwhile, distributed three assists.
Matthew Weigand (Massapequa, NY) led the Privateers with nine ground balls, while
Kieran Hendry (East Northport, NY) and
Grant Gifford (Oakdale, NY) were both credited with three caused turnovers.
Ben McGrady (Annapolis, MD) (1-1) made 12 saves in a losing effort before giving way to
Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY), who notched four saves.
Savarese tallied five goals and two assists for the Ducks. Matthew Pergola added four goals and an assist, while Kevin Crowley had three goals and three assists. Keegan Haskell scored twice to go along with two assists, and Carter Haskel handed out three assists. Nicolas Accardo paced Stevens with seven ground balls. Joseph Cawley, meanwhile, forced seven Maritime turnovers and picked up six ground balls. In addition to collecting five ground balls, goalkeeper Ryan Leahy (4-1) recorded four saves.
Maritime will face the second of three straight opponents that qualified for last season's NCAA Tournament on Saturday, when Stockton (2-1) visits Reinhart Field at 1 p.m. The Ospreys made the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2022.
