NEW PALTZ, NY – Behind three goals and six assists by
Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY), the Maritime College men's lacrosse team (1-1) earned its first victory of the season, 14-10 over New Paltz (0-1), on Wednesday afternoon at South Turf Field. Tomich's six assists matched a career-high and were one off the single-game program record, while his nine points equaled the fourth-most for a single-game by a Privateer.
New Paltz scored the only goal of the first quarter before Maritime erupted for four straight in a five-minute period in the second quarter. After a goal by
Derek Walter (Ronkonkoma, NY) made it 5-2, the Hawks got a man-up tally from Ryan Scully to pull within 5-3 at halftime.
In the second half, the Privateers rattled off nine consecutive goals to pull away. Maritime shut out New Paltz 5-0 in the third quarter, with the final two goals of that run coming seconds apart by
Charles Gerace (Miller Place, NY) and
Joseph Bruno (East Islip, NY). Tomich was then involved in all four of the Privateers' fourth quarter goals, as Maritime extended its advantage to 14-3. The Hawks mounted a late comeback, scoring the final seven goals of the contest, but the Privateers held on for the 14-10 triumph.
Sean Foley (Long Beach, NY) was on the receiving end of three Tomich assists and finished with four goals to go along with an assist. Bruno scored twice while also going 17-for-23 on faceoffs and picking up a team-high eight ground balls. Walter and
Parker Reilly (West Islip, NY) both added two goals for the Privateers.
Ben McGrady (Annapolis, MD) (1-0) got the start in net and earned the win. He played the first three quarters, allowing three goals and making three saves.
Scully had a hat trick for New Paltz, while John Reese tallied four points on two goals and two assists. Anthony Senecal also found the back of the net twice, and Thomas Armetta distributed three assists to go along with four ground balls. Michael Devoe led the Hawks with eight ground balls. Goalkeeper Ryan Steinhart (0-1) was credited with 15 saves in a losing effort.
On Saturday, Maritime concludes its season-opening three-game road trip with a 1 p.m. matchup at Salve Regina (1-1). Last season, the Privateers and Seahawks met at Reinhart Field, with Maritime earning a 12-10 win.
