NEWBURGH, NY – Ryan Donovan (North Salem, NY) became the newest member of the Maritime College men's basketball 1,000-point club on Tuesday night. Needing nine points to reach the milestone, he finished with a game-high 15 in the Privateers' (14-10, 10-5 Skyline) 65-60 loss to Mount St. Mary (9-15, 6-9 Skyline) at the Kaplan Recreation Center.
Donovan becomes the first Maritime player to reach the 1,000-point mark since
Jaylin Gray in the final game of last season. Gray, however, transferred into the program. The last Privateer to score 1,000 points playing exclusively for Maritime was Brendan McGovern in 2020.
In addition to his 15 points, Donovan pulled down six rebounds.
Robbie Mitchell (Staten Island, NY) had 12 points and three steals, while
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) tallied nine points, seven boards and three assists.
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) recorded nine points and four assists, and
Aleksandar Begovic (Kotor, Montenegro) contributed nine points to go along with 20 rebounds, the third-most for a single game in program history.
Maritime shot 36.8 percent (25-of-68) from the floor and outrebounded Mount St. Mary 46-30. The Privateers were just 6-for-31 (19.4 percent) from three-point land and 4-for-11 (36.4 percent) at the charity stripe, though.
For Mount St. Mary, Jayden Figueroa had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. He also recorded six blocks. Elijah Barnett finished with 12 points, while Ryan Graham tallied 10 points. As a team, the Knights shot 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the field and 35 percent (7-of-20) from downtown. Mount St. Mary was also a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line.
After the teams traded baskets early on, the Knights went on an 11-5 run to open up a 19-11 lead at the 13:03 mark of the first half. Mount St. Mary extended its advantage to a game-high 18 points at 38-20 with 2:29 left until halftime. Noble hit a jumper on the other end, though, to spark a 9-2 Maritime spurt that cut the Privateers' deficit to 11 points, 40-29, at the break.
With Mount St. Mary in front 44-31, Mitchell's offensive rebound and layup started a nine-point rally that brought the Privateers within four, 44-40. A Mitchell trey made it a three-point game, 52-49, with 7:50 to go before the Knights responded with an 8-2 run to push their advantage back to nine, 60-51, with 4:04 remaining. Maritime again got within three at 63-60, with 40 seconds left, but Mount St. Mary got the offensive board after a missed jumper and the Privateers were forced to foul. Barnett hit a pair of free throws to close out a 65-60 victory for the Knights and snap Maritime's five-game winning streak.
The Privateers conclude the regular season with a 1 p.m. matchup at Sarah Lawrence (7-17, 5-10 Skyline) on Saturday. Maritime will clinch a home game in the first round of the Skyline Conference tournament with a win or a Merchant Marine loss to Mount St. Mary.
